Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a Grade 2 topic or subject area. Learning Objective(s): When given five sentences, students will select the appropriate vocabulary word to complete each sentence receiving 4 out of 5 correct. Learning Objective(s) stated in kid-friendly language: Okay boys and girls, today we are going to learn five new words, and at the end of today you will be able to use each of these words in a sentence. Evaluation of Learning Objective(s): The fill in the blank worksheet will have five sentences each with a blank in the sentence, and a word bank at the top with the five vocabulary words inside. The students will fill in the blanks in the sentences with the appropriate vocabulary word that fits in the sentence in order for it to make sense. Engagement: Okay boys and girls how many of you like to dance? Teacher pauses to allow the students to think and answer. Why do you like or not like to dance? Teacher pauses to allow the students to think and answer. Dancing is one of my favorite things to do because it makes me happy. Now I am going to read you a story about a giraffe that cant, but wants to learn how. Now as I am reading I want you to look for these words, Teacher will put the note cards with the words on them in front of the students for them to see as the teacher reads. As I am reading be looking for these words and try and see if you can figure out what they mean just by listening to what is happening in the story. I dont want you to say anything when you see the word, because I want you to hear the story, so just be paying attention and think to yourself what you think the word might mean and after we read we will go over what these words mean. The teacher begins reading the story; make sure to make eye contact with the students while reading the story. During the reading portion questions to ask: Who is the main character of the story? What do we know about Gerald? How are the other animals dancing? How do you think Gerald feels? Teacher will emphasize the vocabulary words: Crooked, Buckled, Elegant, Useless and Miracle. Once the teacher has finished the book she will ask questions about comprehension of the story. Has anyone ever told you that you cant do something? How did that make you feel? How should you treat someone who is bad at something? What do you do if you are bad at something?
Learning Design:

Teaching: The first word we are going to discuss is Crooked. What do you think Crooked means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, Crooked means bent or curved; something that is not straight. Can you give me a different example of something that is crooked? Teacher pauses to allow students to respond, and if they cannot think of an example the teacher will provide one. Yes a zigzag line is Crooked, very good! Now can you think of something that would mean the opposite of Crooked? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond, a straight line or a light pole or flagpole would be the opposite of Crooked. The next word we will learn is buckled. What do you think Buckled means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, Buckled means to collapse, fall or crumple. When your knees buckle that means they get really tight and you cant move them so you fall over. Can you give me an example of a time that your knees Buckled, or you saw

I.

someone elses knees buckle? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Great examples! Now what do you think would mean the opposite of Buckled? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, so if you straighten out your knees or can move them easily and smoothly that means they are not buckled right? Teacher pause to clear up any confusion the students may have about the word and the same and opposite meanings. Now lets look at the word Elegant. What do you think this word means? Elegant describes something that is very beautiful and fancy. Can you give me another example of something that is Elegant? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Very good! Something that is also Elegant is when people go to a ball and are dressed very nice, they look Elegant. What is something that is not Elegant? Can you think of an example that is the opposite of Elegant? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, very good the opposite of Elegant would be ugly or boring. Next we will look at the word Useless. What do you think useless means? Teacher gives students time to think and respond. Very good, okay lets think about the word itself. Teacher covers up the ending less what is this word? Students will reply Use! And what does use mean? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Use refers to something that serves a purpose right? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Teacher covers up the beginning of the word Use- now what does the ending less mean? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. When less is the ending of a word it means not having whatever the first word is. So if Use is the first part and less is the second part what do you think Useless means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, it means having no purpose. Can you give me an example of something that is useless? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, things we throw away are useless, like trash or wrapping from a package, things that do not serve a purpose or are not important are what? Students reply Useless!. Very good, now what would be the opposite of useless? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. The opposite of useless would be something that is useful, something that serves a purpose and is valuable. What is an example of something that serves a purpose, something that you use a lot or love? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, for me, my computer is very useful! Very good! The nest word we are going to talk about is miracle. What do you think Miracle means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. A Miracle is something that happens with no explanation. Something that people cannot believe because it is out of the ordinary, not normal. Can you give me an example of something that would be considered a Miracle? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, watching a pig fly would be considered a miracle, because no pig has ever flown before. Or if someone is very sick and there is no treatment for him or her, and then they become well again that would be considered a miracle, because it is not normal to happen. Can you give me an example of the opposite of a miracle? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Okay, coming to school everyday would not be considered a miracle, because you come all of the time it is normal for you. Okay, now lets go over each of the words quickly. Crooked means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Teacher will address any misconceptions. Buckled means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Teacher will address any misconceptions. Elegant means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Teacher will address any misconceptions. Useless means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Teacher will address any misconceptions. Miracle means? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Teacher will address and misconceptions. Great job boys and girls you all did very well listening and figuring out what these words meant even before I told you the meaning! Opportunity for Practice: Now we are to practice using these words, and learn a better understanding of each one so that you all will be able to use these words all the time! We are going to play a game where on of you will have a sticky note on your forehead with a vocabulary word on it for your partner to see. You will not be able to see the word, because your partner is going tot explain the word using definitions examples, synonyms and antonyms so that you can try and guess what the word is. Okay, now stand up and face your partner. Teacher comes over and puts a sticky note with the word on it on the students forehead. Now whoever does not have a note on their forehead will try and explain the word to their partner, do II.

not say the word because they are going to guess what the word is! Ready? Go! The teacher will walk around and facilitate the students and clear up any confusion if the students do not remember a word, or are having trouble describing it. Once your partner has guessed the words, silently raise your hand and I will come around and give the other person a new word! Teacher will repeat this process until all the groups have guessed the words. Well-done boys and girls! You all did a great job explaining these words and giving different examples for each. Now that you all have explained these words and heard them being described by your partner we are going to play a different game. I am going to lay each of these flash cards on your table. When I say a word that means the same as one of the vocab words you are going to compete with your partner to see who can slap the right word that matches what I say first! Whoever slaps the word first will keep the card on the table next to them and whoever has the most cards will win! Do you understand how to play? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and ask questions. Teacher will address and misconceptions. Are we ready? Okay what word means the same as Fancy or beautiful? Teacher pauses to allow students to find the word. What word was it? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Elegant! Thats right! So what does elegant mean? Teacher pauses to make sure the students are confident with the meaning of the word. Okay heres the next one, which word means the same as tight or causes you to fall down? Teacher pauses to allow students to find the word. What word was it? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Buckled! Thats right! So what does buckled mean? Teacher pauses to make sure the students are confident with the meaning of the word. Ready for the next one? Here it is, the word that describes an event that is unbelievable. Teacher pauses to allow students to find the word. What word was it? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, the word is Miracle! What does miracle mean? Teacher pauses to make sure the student are confident with the meaning of the word. Great job! Here comes the next one! What word means the same as zigzag, not straight? Teacher pauses to allow students to find the word. What word was it? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, the word is crooked! So what does crooked mean? Teacher pauses to make sure the student are confident with the meaning of the word. Good, ready for the next one? What word means having no purpose? Teacher pauses to allow students to find the word. What word was it? Teacher pauses to give students time to think and respond. Yes, the word is useless! What does the word useless mean? Great job boys and girls I am very impressed with how quickly you are retaining the meanings of these words! Assessment Now that you all have a good understanding of these words you are going to use them in sentences. I am going to give you a sheet with five different sentences on them. Each sentence will have a blank with a word missing form the sentence. At the top of the page is a word bank of all of the words we just learned, and you are going to choose the correct word from the word bank to write in the blanks. When you think you have a found a word that makes sense in the sentence I want you to write the word in the sentence and re-read it to yourself, to make sure it makes sense. There should be no talking while you complete this. Do you all have any questions? Teacher will pause to answer any questions, and give further explanations of the expectations until the students are clear. I am going to handout the worksheets, and once you have one you may start working on it! Teacher will pass out papers and walk around the room to answer questions and make sure the students are not talking. Once you are finished you may turn your work into me and you may work on your independent reading. Closure: Did you all like reading the story Giraffes Cant Dance? Teacher pauses to allow the students to think and respond. What was your favorite part of the story? Why was that your favorite part? My favorite part was when Gerald started dancing, and even he couldnt believe that he was able to dance! It was a Miracle that he was able to dance right? Teacher pauses to allow students to think and respond. Now throughout this week I want you to be looking for ways to use these new words that we learned today. If you hear someone else use one of these words, try and remember how they used it and you can share with the class the next time we meet! I am very proud of the way you all were listening well today and how you paid attention to instruction! Well-done boys and girls! IV. III.

Materials and Resources: Giraffes Cant Dance by Giles Andreae Flash cards with the words on the front and definitions on the back 5 Post-It notes with the words written on them Fill in the Blank! Worksheet Differentiation Strategies (including plans for individual learners): H Students will play the practice game using the flash cards and choosing the same meaning AND do the same activity with choosing the opposite word provided by the teacher. The assessment worksheet will not have the word bank. L Instead of acting out and explaining the words during the practice, the teacher will practice giving the students sentences with the word missing and the students will say the appropriate word. This will give the students confidence before the assessment.

Data Analysis: Both students I worked with did a great job interacting during the activity. Both students participated and were engaged in the lesson. Both students scored a 100% on the Find the Missing Word assessment. Reflection: Giraffes Cant Dance was a great book to read to second graders. There are a handful of words to use for vocabulary instruction. The book is fun and engaging and connects to real life for the students. The activities we did in the lesson: taboo and slap the word, were great ways for the students to directly identify and explain the words; and have the opportunity to practice their knowledge.
