Martha Ochoa English 1311 Professor Jennifer Falcon Discourse communities Response Writing is important in different aspects of our

lives. Writing is a form of expressing feeling, ones self, a persons thoughts, opinions, information, and entertainment. Writing is one of the mostly used tools to communicate through anything such as the internet, mail, education, jobs etc. Discourse community refers to how I interact with the different environments such as school, work, church, and family/friends through writing. Discourse community is also about the values I hold for each one and describes how they differ and how they are similar. I joined my family by being born into it. The way I talk with my family is usually by text because most of the time Im not home when everyone else is. Its easier to text each other with whatever we need or want to talk about because most of the time some of us are at work or school. For example, I might text my mom with Hello mom I need . Or How was your day today? With my friends I might text them whats up? or what have you been up to? Not as polite as talking to my family as you can see. The topics I would write with my family/friends include school, job(s), birthdays, movies, TV shows, news,etc. We communicate these topics through texting, letters, e-mail, and birthday cards to stay in touchand to show how important we are to each other as well as to know that no matter what we are here for each other. One important rule for my discourse community is to be respectful to one another, to listen, and to respect my elders. This discourse community helps me because its a calm environment where I can be relaxed and talk about anything with them even if I cant see them face to face, I can just

write to them. In my civic community I joined by going to church every Sunday but if I want to go to a retreat to help spread Gods word to other people I would have to join Solairse, a group that travels to Navajo and teaches them and show them the word of God. The way we communicated was basically through text. The topics wed talk about was for the dates to fundraise whether Id be for the church or for the trip to Navajo. Also, we might discuss the deadlines to pay for the trip, and to tell us when practices and meeting were for the plays we would be preforming in the lectures. Wed also communicate through this discourse community to talk if we were spiritually ready for our trip because it was essential to know if we are strong spiritually to fulfill the purpose and duty to our God to spread his word with a focused mind. We also talked about other performances we did in our community here like going to the detention center to talk with troubled kids that they can still improve their livesto a better one, and we performed in our church to show what we have learned and experience in our lives with God. The rules were to attend all the meetings (or at least most of them) to be respectful, dress appropriately, be helpful, be on time, and memorize the plays. In my academic community I enrolled and once that process was completed, Ihad to go to orientation where they taught me what I need to know/do to work my way in the school. Depending on how I was going to pay my education with financial aid I had to fill out paperwork to see if I was eligible. The way this discourse community communicates is through e-mail, paperwork, and letters. The rules are that you must be professional, be assertive, be respectful, be on time, make appointments, make sure to keep track on any information that you need to know about and follow the rules the university requires you to read. For example, I would speck to the financial office was by being professional; "Hello, My name is Martha Elizabeth Ochoa and I'd

like to check on my financial status." Topics include my status on financial aid, what my schedule would be, and other things that concern education. For example advising for what major and minor you want to pursue in your life, and if you are eligible for the classes and what classes are required for that path. Also take any opportunities if you werent eligible for a certain class, you have to keep track of what the school provides for you to catch up and do paperwork to apply for these tests. The topics Id talk about with school are my overall status, tuition, help, classes and grades. In my professional community I work at apartment complex as an assistant. I applied for the job ,spoke with the manager, and I worked one Saturday to see how I would do. After,they gave me the job. The rules that I have to follow are to dress business formal during the week and semi-formal on Saturdays, be on time, be friendly and kind to all customers, finish paperwork that is given to me on that given day, and punch in and punch out of work. The type of writing communication includes texting because if I was ever to be late I would have to text my boss somethingsimilar to Hello Ms. Mendoza (whatever the reason you are late or cant go to work) sorry for the inconvenience, thank you for your time, sincerely Martha E. Its very important to be respectful and polite to co-workers and bosses because they are people you will have to work with a lot and who you are going to have to impress to show them you know what you are doing and you are great at your job. Writing on memos and work orders are very important because they are anything that the residents are having trouble whether it is with repair in their apartment or disturbances with another resident. The worker orders are to inform our maintenance crew to go to the apartments and fix whatever needs to be fixed. If it werent for writing most of the things we do in our discourse communities would be very difficult to accomplish and connect with tasks that need to be done in the different

involvements that we include ourselves in. Its essential to communication and helps us have a better understanding of the people around us and our environment. These are the different ways I communicate in my discourse communities. Its an efficient way of connecting me with family/friends, work, school, and my community.
