Same sex marriage is now legal in 16 states, according to gaymarriage.procon.org. Over 43% of the U.S.

population live in a state that provides some protections for gay couples. The progress is undeniable, the movement is spreading, and the factious topic is becoming ever more imminent. It is no longer acceptable to sit on the fence idly watching. It is time to choose a side. Those opposed believe that an amendment to the traditional definition of marriage would enervate marriage as an institutions and lead to other unacceptable changes such as polygamy, interspecies marriages, and incest. As stated by politico.com, they also seek to protect children, who deserve to be raised by both a mother and a father. It is understandable why it is so important to protect these values in a world that does not respect the family unit as it used to. Those of us in favor believe that amendments are sometimes necessary, and in this case, most certainly are. We do not believe that gay marriage will lead to other untraditional or grotesque relationships, but believe that it will strengthen families in America. It will increase available homes for children in need of adoption, and two mothers is better than no mothers. The amendment will encourage equal treatment for couples of all orientations as well as provide them with the same fiscal benefits already available to straight couples. Ergo, it will not hurt, but help families in America. Family is an essential unit of society, it builds identity and character in children, and gives all its members a sense of belonging. There is a common belief that marriage is hallowed, and should be treated with care. If this were not true, then the controversy over legalizing gay marriage would not be so prevalent. This is clearly an issue that needs to be argued over, picked apart, well thought out, and determined with utmost care, because it affects the family, an institution that affects our entire society. The fact that there are disputations fomented over the details is proof that America is still concerned with the right priorities. This topic is often approached with fervent passion and blazing eyed gumption to protect wither civil rights or religion. But for those fighting for family, it is a much more sensitive and life altering battle. The initial realization that the fight is for the same thing, from different viewpoints, we may be on a faster and more halcyon road to a solution. And may the road lead us to a place where all kinds of families are recognized as legitimately as they are recognized in our hearts.
