Student: Jacqueline Garay-Cruz Course: EDU 503 Grade: 3 Topic: Sun, Earth,& Moon Instructional Objective

Professor: Cleckley Date: December 2013 Content Area: Science

Following our class trip to the Vanderbilt Planetarium, the student will watch a You Tube Video on the sun, earth and moon and construct a sun, earth, and moon model and understand the relative size of all three as well as understand the concept of rotation and revolution in relation to the sun, earth, and moon at 100% accuarcy. Standards and Indicators Mathematics, Science, and Technology Standard 4: The Physical Setting Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science. This will be evident when students can list the relative concepts of rotation and revolution when constructing the sun, earth and moon model.

The Arts Standard 2: Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in the arts in various roles. This will be evident when students create a model of the sun, earth and moon m using crayons, scissors and fasteners showing them in the correct order they orbit around the sun. Motivation The teacher will bring in a beach ball, a baseball and a ping pong ball and ask the students to observe the size of each object and hypothesize which object is most closely comparable to the size of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. \ Materials

The teacher will utilize direct instruction as well as group discussion. Adaptations The student who is an English Language learner will be provided with pertinent vocabulary words prior to the lesson.

Differentiation of Instruction The teacher understands that all students do not learn the same way. Therefore, students will be separated by pace. To complete the Sun, Moon and Earth model, the below grade level students will do this in 15 minutes, the on- grade level students will do this in 10 minutes and the above grade level students will do it in 5 minutes. Developmental Procedures The students will be asked what they know about the sun, moon and earth. (What does the sun help the earth? What does solar mean? What planet do we live on? Does anyone know if there are any other planets other than Earth? Why is this important to know? many moons are there? What does the moon do for the earth? Do you think other planets have moon) The students will watch a YouTube video relating important information about the sun, earth and moon and the concept of rotation and revolution. The students will be asked to list the differences of rotation and revolution using the information provided from the video on the white board. (What is rotation? What is a revolution, what does rotations tell us about the solar system? How long does rotation take, how long does revolution take?) The Students will construct the sun, moon and sun model individually. (What do you notice about the models? Are they similar to what the sizes of the sun, earth, and moon? Is it easier to construct a model or watch a demonstration? How would you understand rotation and revolution best?)

Assessment

Students will create their model in the correct size order around the sun as well as include at least 2 facts about rotation and revolution that they will share with the class. Independent Practice After studying the basic facts about the sun, earth and moon and the concept of rotation and revolution students will be given a worksheet where they have to fill in the blanks relating to rotation and revolution. Academic Intervention and Academic Enrichment Academic Intervention: For the student who is having trouble meeting the objective the teacher will meet with the student for one-to-one assistance. Academic Enrichment: The student who easily reaches the objective will be asked to look further on the internet and make a poster showcasing facts about the moons of different planets.
