Lesson Overview (Description)

Describe the lesson here.

Task 1: Fraction Video Overview and Interactive Quiz

a) b) c) d) e) Give students pre-assessment (previous day during math). Watch Fraction Video on Brain Pop, Jr. Take the Easy and Hard Quiz linked to the video. Allow students to come to the Smartboard to answer the questions by a random draw of sticks from the fair jar. Discuss any fraction misconceptions students may have and answer any questions.

Task 2: Fraction Interactive Smart Exchange Lesson

a) b) c) d) e) Students are each given a Hershey chocolate bar. the lesson progresses. Students will be chosen to come to the board to perform the activities included in the lesson while other students are using the chocolate bar as manipulatives. Give formative assessment to guide the next lesson. Re-teach or Enrich the next lesson as needed, using the formative assessment as a guide to the students current understanding of fractions. Students are guided through the activity by dividing their Hershey bar into the appropriate fractions as

Assessments:

Oftentimes teachers use Brain Pop and Brain Pop, Jr. to introduce topics that are being taught in the classroom, Annie and Moby are characters with whom my students have become familiar. They are completely engaged when the videos are playing and they love to take the quizzes at the end to show they were paying attention. Many other teachers use this resource in the classroom as well. https://www.facebook.com/pages/BrainPOP/8706396621 http://www.brainpop.com/educators/community/2013/10/01/ SmartExchange is being used my many teachers in the classroom to teach fractions to second graders. It is evident that teachers present fractions in many different ways by how many have created and posted fraction lessons in SmartExchage. For those teachers who are not able or willing to put forth the time to create their own fractions lesson, there are many posted by other teachers to choose from. http://exchange.smarttech.com/search.html?q=fractions&subject=Mathematics&grade=Grade+2&region=en_U S The Smartboard is an excellent way to engage and assess students quickly and efficiently. Educators are relying on the Smartboard and all its components to make hands-on, student-based learning more evident. http://downloads01.smarttech.com/media/sitecore/en/pdf/smart_publications/edcompass/feature_articles/curr ent_article/edcompass-featurearticle-apr2011.pdf

I have not yet implemented the use of the Smart Clickers in my classroom. I am anxious to see how this will work with my second grade students. I love the idea that I can see who got it and who needs help so quickly. http://downloads01.smarttech.com/media/sitecore/en/pdf/smart_publications/edcompass/feature_articles/curr ent_article/edcompass-featurearticle-apr2011.pdf http://www.educause.edu/ero/article/clickers-classroom-active-learning-approach I am also interested in using the new Smart Table that I just received from another teacher. He was unable to use it in his ECE classroom because his students are unable to work independent at any time. I am excited to be able to allow up to 4 students at a time to practice the same concepts we are learning during whole group to enhance and enrich their learning experiences. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_FRmYXtneQ Finally, I am currently working on learning more about my iPad and the apps I can use in the classroom. I love how students can work anywhere in the room. I can place a student on the iPad to practice any concept close to where I am teaching a small group and I can keep an eye on the student using the iPad. It is obvious how many teachers are using the iPad in the classroom to teach math by how many apps are available. http://www.tcea.org/documents/PD/Free%20Must-Have%20Apps%20for%20Elementary%20Math.pdf
