The Diabetes Self-Management Program The Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) is a 6-week workshop for people with type 2 diabetes. It teaches the skills needed in the day-to-day management of diabetes and to maintain nd/ inc e se ifes ctivities. O igin y deve ped nd ev u ted in p nish it w s t ns ted into English and tested in a randomized, controlled study. It is offered extensively throughout the United States. Programs are usually held in community settings such as senior centers, churches, libraries, and hospitals. Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration; 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; 3) healthy eating 4) appropriate use of medication; and 5) working more effectively with health care providers. Participants will make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program.* *Stanford School of Medicine. Running Header: DSMP Series Needs Statement Since the mid-1990s, the prevalence of diabetes has more than doubled among Delawareans. In 1995, an estimated 4.3 percent of Delawarean adults had diabetes. By 2007, this number had increased to nearly 9 percent. P esent y e w es di betes p ev ence te is s ight y highe than that of the nation. Approximately 58,000 Delawareans over the age of 18 currently have diabetes. Another 9,297 Delawareans have pre-diabetes a condition that occurs when blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal, but not yet classifiable as diabetes.2

The goal of DSMP is to promote healthy living amongst Delawareans suffering with Type II Diabetes through the use of managed care.
