Lesson Title: Grade Level: Subject:

The Cells within City of Atlanta 7

th

CC/GPSs:

Science Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives S7L2: Students will describe the structures and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Critical Component: B. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria) to basic cell functions.

National Technology Standards:

Creativity and innovation; communication and collaboration and research and information fluency

Long-Term Learning Goal or Outcome:

Students will be able to research, create and explain how cell structures relate to basic cell functions to the city.

ABCD Objectives or Outcomes:

After watching the video, the students will be able to create and present their own digital story on a cell structure and its basic function within a cell in a week period with 100% accuracy.

Assessment Plan:

Description of Assessment Formative Assessment: Students will present digital stories in class and receive peer and student feedback for grading. Rubric for digital story and Focus Group to ensure understanding of organelle to function without aid of teacher outside of class. Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design: Day 1: Class starter and lesson connection: Class Opening: Have you ever wondered what functions are in your body and how they all work together to complete task throughout the day? Would the body function without certain organelles? Allow students to share their responses. Ask do they have prior knowledge of cell organelles and their functions, if so share with the class and correct if wrong. Were going to learn about the various organelles and how they function in our bodies . Access Prior Knowledge: Teacher will review cell organelles and functions

Question of the day

and a brief technology session of imovie with the class during discussion. Teacher Activity: Give direct instruction on the pages to read to ensure knowledge of organelles and their function. This might involve a powerpoint in addition to the pages read out of science textbook with the following information: Organelles structure and their functions: -Plasma Membrane -Nucleus -Mitochondria -Ribosomes -Golgi Apartus -Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) -Lysosomes Gain Attention: Teacher So, how would you compare the function of the organelle in your body to the function of the city? Allow students to look within their notes and brainstorm the comparison. Student Activity: In small groups or individually, brainstorm some examples that the city compares to the organelles in the body. The examples you come up with will be used for your digital story that will need to be completed as homework and due in the next 2 weeks. Homework: start brainstorming how you are going to present your digital story on how cell organelles and their functions relate to every day things. Day 2 Imovie tutorial if needed, but mainly an in class work day on digital story individually or with small group. Materials and Resources: Day 3-6 Students put their presentations together to show class. Further questions can be emailed to teacher if need further help. Brainstorming (mind-meister concept map) Powerpoint Internet Imovie

Teacher and student activities:

Technology Connection:

Science Textbook provided by school Presentation of my digital story of cell organelles

and their functions Powerpoint on lesson of cell organelles Imovie how to video

Future Actions :

Reflection on Lesson Design As an educator, I will take more time prior to class to prepare attention grabbers to ensure I gage every students attention when those 6 min of concentration are up. Some students didnt have access to imovie outside of class so I allowed class time to be in class work, but next time I would like for the student to do work outside so I will have to find other presentation options.
