Analysis In 2008, the federal government established a program to give unemployed workers in hard-hit states up to 99 weeks of benefits; the program is set to expire on Dec. 28, 2013 Congress has not included an extension in the new budget, and many lawmakers say any deal to extend benefits would have to be brokered by the White House and House Speaker Boehner (R-Ohio) If no deal is brokered, 1.3 million will lose benefits immediately, while another 850,000 will lose benefits between January and March 2014 If Congress extends the program, it must be prepared to spend $20 to $25 billion to continue providing unemployment benefits
