As an older student, Sheldon brings a wealth of experience with him into his college experience; as a lifeguard, swim instructor, coach and aquatics director. He has always taken his coursework seriously, as demonstrated in maintaining a 3.4 GPA. In class he consistently asked focused questions, often applying content and concepts to his real-world experiences. Sheldon leads by example and has been an excellent role model for other students. Within the Department of Health Studies, Physical Education and Human Performance Sheldon has been an active member of the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science Majors Club since he transferred to Adelphi. He has helped organize the clubs two annual fund raising events for charity, the Hoops for Heart and Wheelchair Basketball Tournaments. For the past year he has served as Secretary of the club and recently has been elected Vice President, also serving as a membe f the c ubs executive b a d. Sheldon has been active in the profession. He has attended NYS AHPERD professional conferences at the Zone (Suffolk and Nassau) and State level. He presented and served as presider last year at the NYS AHPERD Annual Conference 2011 in Verona, as well as serving as a presider at the Nassau Zone conference 2012. Sheldon will again be presiding and presenting with his fellow students at the upcoming 2012 NYS AHPERD Annual Conference, not one but three presentations. This past spring Sheldon was invaluable in the success of the 2012 Nassau Zone conference. He and the club president organized the club members and program majors in working with the participants and programs so that the conference ran smoothly. Sheldon also has been extensively involved in community service. He has served as Assistant Scoutmaster and Cubmaster. He also is the founder of Aquatics, Inc. which provides free swim instruction to underprivileged children whose families cannot afford to pay for lessons.

Sheldon is one of the most hard working and dedicated students I know, yet he consistently seeks to learn and improve. He is bright, energetic, and extremely dependable, yet he has a gentle yet assertive air about him that other students look up to. From the moment I met him Sheldon has demonstrated commitment, integrity and a level of professionalism that is beyond his peers and classmates. Sheldon is simply outstanding. N t su p isi g y, he d is Ade phis Depa tme ta Major of the Year and has been named the NYS AHPERD Jay B. Nash Outstanding Major of the Year. This award truly is an honor. I can think of no one more capable or more deserving to receive the Ruth Abernathy Scholarship and I am please to give him my recommendation.

Sincerely,

Ellen M. Kowalski, Ph.D. Department of Health Studies, Physical Education and Human Performance Science Adelphi University 516 877-4265 Kowalski@adelphi.edu
