Normal stress
It is the stress acting perpendicular to the surface under consideration. Normal stress can be cause by several loading methods like axial tension and compression.

Shear Stress
The stress acting tangentially along the surface of the component due to which the component shears off.. Shear stress can ais caused by various loading methods, including direct shear, torsion, and can be significant in bending.

Theories of failure
These theories explains the condition at which solid materials fail under the action of continuous loads. The two important theories are: Maximum principal stress theory Maximum shear stress theory

Enlarged view of element k from the front

Element K is subjected to bending that produces a tensile stress acting in the .vdirection. Also, there is a torsional shear stress acting at K. This indicates that the bending moment at A " is 1540 lb.

Stress on element K
CT, = M/S S = 7rD732 = ['TT(1.25in)3]/32 = 0.192 in' CT, = (15401b-in)/(0.192in') = 8030 psi The torsional shear stress acts on element A' in a way that causes a downward shear stress on the right side of the element and an upward shear stress on the left side.

..Contnd
This action results in a tendency to rotate the element in a clockwise direction, which is the positive direction for shear stresses according to the standard convention. Thus for element K

We can calculate the principal stress using the given formula
