Australian dream holidays to die for
THE number of
Australians dying overseas has
skyrocketed as an increasing
number of travellers take
advantage of cheap
international airfares.
Figures provided to The
Daily Telegraph revealed
Thailand was the destination
where more Australian holiday
makers died.
Yet-to-be-released
Department of Foreign Affairs
and Trade figures showed that
in 2008-09, 1038 died while on
holiday, up from 994 the
previous year and a huge jump
from 2004-05 when 642
perished.
The number of
Australians arrested overseas
also soared, cracking the 1000
mark in 2008-09.
According to the latest
figures, Thailand, the US,
Indonesia and China were the
main destinations where Aussie
tourists were getting into legal
trouble.

The US accommodated
500,000 Australian tourists and
recorded 50 deaths, while Indonesia
recorded 58 deaths among 436,000
visitors.
The number of Australians
going to hospital overseas shot up
to 1480 cases in the past financial
year - a 130 per cent increase from
2004-05.
In Thailand, Indonesia and
China alone there were 522 hospital
admissions in 2008-09.
While there were just 81
Aussies taken to hospital across the
US, it was the destination of choice
to get into trouble with the law.
In the 12 months to June
more than 200 Australians were
arrested in the US, well above the
63 arrested in Thailand and the 60
detained in China. Hong Kong and

Pitana: Australia is another

snake is stalking his Territory
home after it slid into his bed
and bit him on the face while
he slept.
Jeff Hosie got the fright of
his life when he woke to a snake
latched on to his nose, the
Northern Territory News reports.

returned the next night - only this
time it crawled into bed with his
16-year-old son Nathan and bit
him on the back of his leg.
"He's a rogue snake -
he's got us twice now," he said.
"He's like a stalker snake.

A MAN got the fright of his life
- and learnt he should keep the
toilet seat down - when he
found a python almost double
his size in his dunny.
Erik Rantzau, 49,
discovered the 3.5m wild carpet
python in the S-bend about four
weeks ago in his home near
Darwin.
"I happened to be walking
past the toilet and glanced in
there and here was this snake in
a massive coil just sitting up in
the toilet," he told the Northern
Territory News.
"He was that big that he
physically blocked the pipes.
"He stayed in for four
days then went out in the garden
again for a week or two then

"It's a bit of a Territory-born
invention," he said. "When I came
back we could see he was coming
in and out of the back door and
going straight into the toilet."

call the snake catcher hotline -
1800 453 210 - if they find a
snake on their property rather
than risk being bitten while
interfering with it.
This week he managed to
wrangle the evasive reptile when it
decided to poke its nose out of the
toilet bowl.
It was soon released into
nearby bushland.
Mr Peberdy had one piece
of advice for Top Enders: "Look
before you sit!"

a remote rainforest in Papua
New Guinea has discovered a
new species of giant rat.
The Bosavi woolly rat is
the size of a small domestic cat,
weighing about 1.5 kilograms and
measuring 82 centimetres in
length from its nose to its tail.
It was discovered in the
crater formed by the extinct
volcano, Mount Bosavi.
Experts say the rat is the
same as those found in any city's
sewers, only bigger.
Gordon Buchanan set up
the infra-red camera which
provided the first images of the
animal.
"This is the biggest true rat
in the world - unbelievable," he

"It's actually so big it
doesn't look like a rat ... it just is

Adelaide's southern suburbs on

Cricket Australia said the new
captain would be chosen by the
selectors and had to be ratified by the
board. Selectors could use Ponting's
retirement to recast the generally
unsuccessful approach to the game
and pick a specialist side with a leader
like experienced Cameron White.
White has a brilliant Twenty20
record, but was not included in the
original Twenty20 World Cup 2009
squad. Even when he was brought in
to replace Andrew Symonds, the hard-
hitting Victorian with a career strike
rate of 150 was not picked in any
match.
Clarke, however, remains
favourite to take over the reins and
has impressed observers recently with
his leadership during the England tour.

played like their season depended on it
(which funnily enough it did), Penrith
acted as little more than a doormat on
the step of the NRL top eight.
Penrith's effort in their 35-0 loss
to Newcastle Knights lacked cohesion,
commitment and desire to compete.
Their 'stars' went missing and, rather
than finishing inside the top eight, they
fell to 11th - higher than most expected at
the start of the season but a
disappointment giving the potential they
hinted at.
Players might want to keep a
low profile around Mulgoa Rd until this
one blows over.
Biggest Flop
It was round that said adieu to a
host of great names, but those stalwarts
in the end were forced to wave goodbye
from the cellar.
NRL veterans Craig Fitzgibbon,
Corey Hughes and Stacey Jones were all
on the wrong side of the ledger in their
respective swansongs. What's worse,
they each ended the season propping up
the bottom three places on the ladder.
While Jones's farewell was a
flop from beginning to end, Fitzgibbon
and Hughes were subjected to far worse
fates as their sides capitulated to turn
potential fairytale wins into heart-
breaking losses that both will prefer to
forget.
After the Roosters led 16-0 just
prior to half-time and the Sharks were
ahead when the full-time siren sounded,
neither player would have imagined
leaving the field a loser. But rugby league

With their season already in the
