Zig bee v/s Bluetooth Technologies 1.

Origin: Bluetooth was launched in the year 1994 by German telecom giant Ericsson while Zigbee was devised in the year 1998. The name Bluetooth has been derived rom !o!ular Euro!ean uni ication "ing# $arald Blatand while Zigbee gets its name rom the dance movements o a honeybee.

%. IEEE Standards: Bluetooth# though not under &EEE now# was de ined under 8'%.1(.1 standard while Zigbee is de ined under &EEE 8'%.1(.4 standard.

). Management Alliances: Zigbee is managed by Zigbee *lliance which tests and certi ies Zigbee based devices. *ll Zigbee based !rotocols get standardi+ed under &EEE. ,n the other hands# Bluetooth is managed or standards and device by a single body: Bluetooth -&G .-!ecial &nterest Grou!/.

4. Protocol Updates: Bluetooth has been u!dated under version %.'# %.1# ).'# 4.' etc while Zigbee received u!dates in %''4# %''0 and %''1. 2ow Zigbee e3ists in two ty!es: Zigbee and Zigbee 4ro which are di erent in terms o addressing algorithms.

(. Frequency: Bluetooth wor"s under %.4 G$+ while 5i67i wor"s at 808 8$+# 91( 8$+ and %.4 8$+ re9uencies.

0. Channel Bandwidth: Bluetooth based channel consume bandwidths u!to 18$+ while Zigbee based networ"s consume bandwidths o '.)8$+# '.0 8$+ and % 8$+ de!ending u!on the re9uency at which networ"s are communicating.

1.

ype o! Computer "etwor#: Zigbee has been designed to communicate under

4ersonal *rea 2etwor" whereas Bluetooth based communication serves or 5ide 4*2 .54*2/.

8. Ma$imum num%er o! cell nodes& &n Bluetooth# u!to 8 cell nodes can be connected to each other while in Zigbee more than 0(#''' cell nodes can be connected together.

9. 'ange: Bluetooth based networ"s can e3ist u!to 1'm# while 5i67i based networ"s can e3ist rom 1'61''meters.

1'. Sel! (ealing "etwor#s: -el $ealing networ"s are those where networ"ing is not disturbed i one node gets damaged. &n sel healing networ"s# the nodes neighboring

the damaged node will create a reverting loo!# thus !reventing any in ormation to be sent to the damaged:non wor"ing node. This "ee!s the networ" u! and ma"es it more stable.

Zigbee based systems are inherently "nown to "ee! u! with sel 6healing networ" technology while Bluetooth doesn;t have this technology ada!tations and research are being made or this. de ined in it# though

11. "etwor#

opologies: Bluetooth networ" can be established in a !oint to !oint

master6slave method# master and u!to 1 slave !iconet networ"s and scatter net .lin"ing two or more !iconets/.

,n the other hand# Zigbee devices can be networ"ed in star# mesh and other generic to!ologies. <arious Zigbee based networ" to!ologies can be connected to each other

in orm o a cluster. *ny Zigbee networ" would have three ty!es o nodes: Zigbee =oordinator# Zigbee >outer andZigbee End!oint.

1%. )ata rans!er 'ates: Bluetooth based networ"s have ma3imum data trans er rates o u!to 18b!s while in Zigbee# data trans er rates are u!to %('?b!s.

1). Spread Spectrum

echniques : -!read -!ectrum techni9ues count or the

!rocesses through which a signal is s!read over re9uency domain. This is done so as to accommodate more signals# increase signal security# reduce signal inter erence etc.

*lmost all wireless networ" !rotocols have de ined some ty!e o s!read s!ectrum techni9ue.

Bluetooth wor"s on 7re9uency $o!!ing -!read -!ectrum techni9ue while Zigbee uses @irect -!read -!ectrum techni9ue. &n 7re9uency ho!!ing# the carrier signal is made to vary in terms o re9uencies while in direct s!read s!ectrumA the original signal is mi3ed and e3tracted rom a !seudo random code at transmitter and receiver# res!ectively.

14. Energy Consumption: 7or any networ"# !ower consum!tion de!ends on the ty!e o data being e3changed# distance between transmitter and receiver# desired !ower to be retained by signal and other actors.

Bluetooth is a !rotocol "nown or e3changing almost all ty!es o data such as te3t# multimedia. ,n the contrast# Zigbee !rotocol is !recisely or o!erational instructions and not much variety o data is "nown to be e3changed using it.

,bviously# Zigbee consumes signi icantly less !ower than its Bluetooth counter!art. Bsually# Zigbee devices are %.(6) times more e icient than those wor"ing at Bluetooth.

1(. Applications: Zigbee based systems are designed or wireless networ"ing among sensors and is more !re erred or devices which are smaller in si+e and consume less energy. T< remote controls# -=*@* system sensor# medical instruments etc. are some areas where Zigbee based networ"ing are done.

Bluetooth based a!!lications are !rimarily in com!uter !eri!herals such as wireless "eyboards# mouse# headsets etc. *lso# some wireless remotes or gesture controlled gadgets use Bluetooth to e3change data.
