Reflection on Teaching Style

EDUP 527

Elizabeth Howe

From the beginning of this program I have had many unique experiences with learning to become a confident and outstanding teacher. Many times I learned more about things relating to the classroom that I thought I understood. Coming into this program having been a substitute teacher
I

have found that I did a fairly good job with the students, but there was so much that I didn't know. I feel

that this methods class was a great help with

the "real" into teaching science for me. I hope to

be a teacher that shows excitement for teaching science, can teach middle school or high school science,

and will continually grow as a teacher.

For me to become a teacher that can exude excitement to the students I must develop an open mindedness and flexibility toward my lesson plans. With this I mean that I have to understand that even

the most well laid plans can fall apart and that is okay. lt is okay as long as within my reflecting and
analyzing I learn from them, and develop something better the next go round. Teaching is not about being perfect and knowing everything about every topic. lt is the knowledge of how each student lea best, and to show that science can be incorporated into everyday

life. I believe that

I can

show my

students my excitement through being a good listener and asking them questions when they tell me about something that they have learned or when they correct me. lf I can show them that it is okay for
me to be excited even when I have made a mistake, maybe they will see that it is okay for them to make
a mistake and still like what they are doing.

feel that when the time comes to create my resume and go to the interviews that the job that

am supposed to have will be the callback that I receive. I truly love many aspects of both middle school and high school science. Middle school is where the students mainly begin their science journey, and
I

feel like that would be a great place to be. On the other hand, the high school atmosphere intrigues me

well. There is a broader learning gap, it seems, between the students that "get" science and those

that do not, but lwould really like to be one of the teachers that can bridge that gap, even just a little.
Continual growth as a teacher is something that I have come to expect from myself and the
teachers around me. I feel that it is a necessary quality for a teacher to possess. lf the teacher does not

feel the need to grow, then maybe the teacher should not be a teacher, Growth, as I have seen in just

more than having a science teacher that has shown me her enthusiasm for what she teaches. I will gain
my confidence and try not to let any teachable moments pass me by.
