Formula Mass

Definition:
The formula mass is the sum of all the masses of all the atoms that make up the compound. It is the total mass of a certain molecule/compound. The formula mass is calculated by adding up all the atomic masses for every atom in the compound.

Examples:
1. Sodium Sulfide

2. Aluminium Hydroxide
*When a formula contains polyatomic ions, the number of atoms inside the brackets are multiplied by any subscript immediately behind the brackets, as shown in this example.

3. Ammonium Sulfate

4. Glucose
*The above were all examples of ionic formulas, but exactly the same principle applies to true molecular formulas, such as that of glucose.
