1. What is Narrative Text Narrative text is a text which tells a story like fable, fairy tales, and legends, and the function is to amuse / to entertain the reader / listener 2. Generic Structure The steps for constructing a narrative text are: * An Orientation : The beginning of a paragraph in which the writer tells to the audience about WHO is/are in the story, WHEN and WHERE the story happened. * A Complication * A Resolution : Shows the characters find the problem. : In which the characters finally find out the solution of the complication after giving a sequence of events that have to be faced. 3. NARRATIVE TEXT Read the text and analyze the generic structure and language features!

Bawang Merah And Bawang Putih BAWANG Putih lived with her step mother and her step sister, Bawang Merah . Bawang putihs mother died when she was a baby. Her father remarried another woman and later her step sister was born .Unfortunately, not long after that her father died. Since then, Bawang Putih lifes was sad. Her step mother and her step sister treated bawang putih badly and always asked her to do all the household duties. One morning, Bawang putih was washing some clothes in ariver. Accidentally her step mother clothes were wash a away by the river. She was really worried so she walked along the river side to find the lost clothes. Finally she met an old woman. She said that she kept the clothes and would give them back to Bawang Putih if she helped the old woman do the household duties. Bawang putih help her happily. After everything was finished, the old woman returned the clothes. She also gave Bawang Putih a gift. The old woman had two pumpkins, one pumpkins was small and the other one was big. Bawang putih had choose one. Bawang putih was not greedy girl. So she took the small one. After thanking the old women, Bawang putih went home. When she arrived home, were step mother and Bawang merah were angry. They had been waiting for her all day long. Bawang Putih then told about the clothes, the old woman, and the pumpkin. Her mother was really angry so she grabbed and the smashed it to the floor. Suddenly they all was surprised. Inside the pumpkin they found jewelries. Realizing what had happened, Bawang Merahs mother got an idea. bawang

Merah, hurry up. Go to the river and throw your clothes into the water. After that , find the old women. Remember, you have take the big pumpkin, the step mother asked Bawang Merah to do exactly the same as Bawang Putih s experience. Bawang Merah immediately went to the river she threw and pretended to search them. Not long after that, she met the old woman. Again she asked Bawang Merah to do household duties and asked the old women to give her big pumpkin. The old women then gave her the big one. Bawang Merah was so happy. She ran very fast.

When she arrived home, her mother was impatient. She directly smashed the pumpkin to the floor. They were screaming. There were a lot of snakes inside the pumpkin! They were really scared. They were afraid the snake would bite them. Mom I think God just punish us. We have to apologize to Bawang Putih, said Bawang Merah. Finally both of them realized their mistakes. They apologized and bawang putih forgave them. Now the family is not poor anymore. Bawang putih decided to sell all the jewelries and used the money for their daily lives. Finally they lived happily and peacefully.

(A)"Actually, I am a prince of this castle. A bad witch turn me into beast and only real love of a maiden willing to accept me as I was, can transform me back to normal. Then Beauty and the prince was married and live happily in the castle.

(B) And one day, Beauty saw that her father was in serious sick. She asked the Beast to let her looked after her father. The beast could not deny but there was a condition that Beauty should come back in 7 days. Beauty thank to the Beast so much. So she was back to her family and looked after her father.

(C)The merchant fallen ill from broken heart at knowing his daughter was being kept prisoner. When Beauty stayed with him, the merchant's condition was getting well. However, Beauty forgot her promise to come back in 7 days. In the night, Beauty had a nightmare. She had a dream that the Beast was dying. Beauty was afraid, then she decided to come back to castle immediately. In the castle, she found the Beast lied down on the ground with its eyes shut. Beauty was sad, then she hugged the Beast and said that she would marry the Beast. Suddenly a miracle took place. The Beast magically turn into a handsome man.

(D)Once upon a time there was a merchant who had three beautiful daughter, Prettiest, Sweetest, and Beauty. One day when a merchant set off for market, the three of his daughter asked him something. Prettiest wanted a dress, Sweetest asked a necklace but Beauty wanted a rose. When the merchant had finished his business, he set off for home. However, a sudden storm blew up and he should found a shelter to take a rest. Then he saw a big castle but there was no one there and he decided to take a rest there.

(E) In the morning, when he left the castle, he saw a beautiful rose in castle gardens. He remembering his promise to Beauty, he bent down to pick a rose. But suddenly a horrible beast came out. The beast was angry because he found there was someone who stole his rose. The beast wanted to kill the merchant. But the merchant was begging to apologize him. Then he told that his youngest daughter wanted a rose when he came back to home. "I shall spare your life, but on one condition, that you bring me your daughter!" said the beast.

In the next day, the Beast brought Beauty the magic mirror which could see her family, far away.

The Story of Keong Emas (The Golden Snail) Once upon a time, there was a King of the Antah Berantah Kingdom wished Dewi Sekartaji became his wife. To do so, he kidnapped her. Fortunately, the God Narada saved Dewi Sekartaji by changing her into a golden snail: Keong Emas. The God told Keong Emas to drift along the river in order to find her husband, Panji Asmoro Bangun. One day, a poor old widow, Mbok Rondo Dadapan, who always fished along the river, found the golden snail and took it home. Then, she put the snail in a jar and took good care of it. All of a sudden, unexpected good things took place in Mbok Rondos life. Coming back from her daily fishing, she found delicious dishes on the table and the house cleaned. She wondered who had been so nice to take care of her house and to do the cooking. When this went on for several days, she could not resist the temptation to find out who the mysterious kind person was. So, one day, instead of fishing, she peeped through a hole in the wall of her house. To her amazement, she saw a beautiful princess came out of the jar and starting to clean the house and preparing a meal.

The next day, the same thing happened. Without wasting any time, Mbok Rondo rushed into the house and smashed the jar. Homeless Dewi Sekartaji could not turn back into a snail. She was adopted by Mbok Rondo. Meanwhile, Raden Panji Asmoro Bangun looked for his wife, wandered from one village to another, finally reaching Dadapan where he found his beloved. Filled with happiness and love, they went back to their kingdom, taking along gook Mbok Rondo and they lived happily ever after. Taken from: Indonesian Folk Tales, 2006
