Use the internet to find definitions/explanations for each of the following terms. You must be prepared to explain these terms in your own words to demonstrate your understanding. INTERNET: The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet to serve several billion users worldwide. MODEM: is a device for connecting two computers by a telephone line, and a modulator converts computer signals into audio signals BANDWIDTH/BPS: is how much data you can send through a network BROWSER: web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. SEARCH ENGINE: is a software system that is designed to search some information on the World Wide Web. META TAG: is used to store information about a Web page but is not displayed in a Web browser. HTTP: provides a standard for Web browsers and servers to communicate. HYPERTEXT: hypertext who the reader can immediately access, or where text can be revealed progressively at multiple levels of detail also called stretch text IP ADDRESS/NUMBER: is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) who participate as a computer network that is used for communication DOMAIN NAME: is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control on the Internet. PACKET SWITCHING: Is a digital networking communications method that groups all transmitted data TCP/IP: is an abbreviation to (transmission control protocol) and is the basic communication language or protocol of the Internet. It can also be used as a communications protocol in a private network

URL/URI: is an abbreviation for (Uniform Resource locator) and is a formatted text string used by Web browsers, email clients and other software to identify a network resource on the Internet. WEBSITE: is a set of interconnected webpages, usually including a homepage, generally located on the same server, and prepared and maintained as a collection of information. NETIQUETTE: is a rule about the proper and polite way to communicate with other people when you are using the Internet. FIREWALL: a computer firewall limits the data that can pass through it and protects a networked server or client machine from damage by unauthorized users. COOKIE: is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user's web browser while the user is browsing that website CLOUD STORAGE: cloud storage is a service model in which data is maintained, managed and backed up remotely and made available to users over a network (typically the Internet). NET NEUTRALITY: is the principle that ISP and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally. P2P: stand for peer-to-peer an is a type of decentralized and distributed network architecture in which individual nodes in the network ADWARE: an adware is any software package which automatically renders advertisements in order to generate revenue for its author. VIRUS:Is a computer virus that attacks a specific software product DATA-MINING: is the computational process of discovering patterns in large data sets. DENIAL OF SERVICE ATTACK: is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. MALWARE: is software that is used by hacker to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information.

PHARMING: can be conducted either by changing the hosts file on a victim's computer or by exploitation of a vulnerability in DNS PHISHING: is the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. SPAM: is a subset of electronic spam involving nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by email. SPYWARE: is an software that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge. TROJAN HORSE: is a hacking program that is a non-self-replicating type of malware which gains privileged access to the operating system. WORM: is a standalone malware computer program that replicates itself in order to spread to other computers.
