Notes on techniques to help students answer questions in the 014/2 UPSR Paper.

Section A Question 1 You can write : a) sentences describing activities and b) sentences describing situation. Or c) combined sentences describing activities and situation. Sample sentences describing situation. 1. There were many beautiful flowers in full bloom. 2. Many people are doing different activities in the park. 3. The park is located near some apartments. 4. There was a wide range of shops selling shoes, electrical appliances and clothes. 5. There is a huge Christmas tree with many colorful ornaments hanging on it. 6. The fishmonger who sells fish has an assistant to help him. 7. There is a basket of fruits on the table next to his bed. Sample sentences describing activities. 1. A man is throwing the garbage bag into the truck. 2. A girl is blowing the candles on the cake. 3. The boy wearing a pair of shorts is picking up the rubbish. 4. The lady carrying a basket is paying the grocer some money. 5. The girl whose hair is long is running around the park. 6. The cat which is in the cage is looking up at the little boy. 7. Two boys are swimming under the waterfall while their mother is serving food. 8. The pupils are walking hurriedly from their classroom to the canteen.

Combine sentences to make up compound and complex sentences. a) A man is jogging in the park. b) A woman is feeding the birds in the park. = A man is jogging and a woman is feeding the birds in the park. a) The man is wearing a pair of tracksuit. b) The man is jogging around the park. = The man who is wearing a pair of tracksuit is jogging around the park. 2

a) A woman is feeding the birds in the park. b) A woman is standing by the lake. = A woman is feeding the birds in the park while standing by the lake. AVOID 1. Using the article the unless you are identifying the person in the picture. E.g : The man is throwing the rubbish. Use A A man is throwing the rubbish. 2. Using many when there is less than 10 people in the picture as in There are many people in the picture. when there are only seven people in the picture. Use a few. 3. Using the past tense form as this section requires you to describe the picture. Try to use the present continuous tense form. 4. Writing sentences in sequence as in a story. You are not writing a story. 5. Making assumptions. E.g A scene in a hospital. She is admitted into the ward because she has fever. 6. Writing more than five sentences. E.g 1. A policeman is standing in the middle of the road. 2. He is wearing a uniform, helmet and white gloves. 3. He is directing the traffic from all directions. 4. There are motorcycles in front of the lorries and busses. The motorcyclist is also wearing a helmet. 5. The vehicles stop when the policeman blows his whistle and raises his hand. They obey him. TO GAIN MORE MARKS 1. Write in compound and complex sentences. 2. Avoid grammatical and structural errors. These are major errors which could lower your band. 3. Avoid punctuation and spelling errors. 4. Introduce new words. Make your sentences interesting and colorful.

SECTION B Question 2(A) YOU MUST : 1. Write your answers in the correct columns. 2. Always refer to the sample answers given in the table. 3. Make sure your spelling and punctuation are correct. - RM for RM5.00 - replace 10.00 a.m. 6.30 p.m. with 10.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. - Places , brand, names - write in upper and lower case. e.g - Kota Kinabalu ( / ) KOTA KINABALU ( X ) unless the sample answer is in the upper case.

- put a comma after each noun or adjective if there is more than one in a column. e.g - food, caps, tents and camping tools

4. DO NOT use hyphens leisurely if there is not enough space for you to write. e.g recreation ( x ) classroom QUESTION 2 (B) YOU MUST : 1. Make a choice. Write your choice in the space provided. 2. Give reasons for your choice. e.g : I would choose Bag A because it is the cheapest. ( / ) I would choose Bag A because the price is RM12.00. ( x ) 3. Construct a variety of sentence structures. 4. Refer to the notes in the table to state your reasons. Try to use the items in the table. 5. Plan your ideas so that your reasons are linked, well-organized, relevant and conveyed clearly. 6. Introduce new words to express your ideas. Instead of like use words such as prefer, favour, love. 7. AVOID spelling and punctuation errors. 8. AVOID writing all the points without giving reasons. Below are suggestions on what you can write as reasons for your choice. Suggested reasons Price/Fee/Fare The price is reasonable. Rate/ Charge/ It is affordable. Cost The price is low. It is within my budget. It will not burn a hole in my pocket. Although the price is high, it is affordable. / worth buying. My father is able to pay for it as it is affordable. Discount It is cheaper after the discount given. I will get a . discount, which is great. The discount offered is great savings for me. I get to save my money as there is a discount. My mother would love the discount as it saves her money. 4

It is a locally made and we should support our local product. It is made in . which is known for its quality. It is locally produced and will boost our economy. My father always encourages us to buy local products. The free gift is attractive. I like the free gift offered. The free gift would be useful for me. I am sure my mother / friend would find the free gift delightful. It is located near my house. It is within a walking distance from my house. It is just a stone throw away from my house. It is not far from our school which would be a perfect meeting place. It is beneficial for me. It is good for my health. It enhances my drawing skills. It helps increase my knowledge. I can improve my grammar and increase my vocabulary. It would help him/ her learn more about the topic. She/ He would find it beneficial for her/him. The things needed are easily obtained. I/ We already have all the things needed so I/ we do not have to buy any of them.

Suitability

It is suitable for me as I can wear it when I go for my tuition classes. It suits my sister well as she likes the material and design. It is suitable for a four year old to watch/ read/ drink/ eat. 5

It is available at Jusco which is near my house. It is available at any sundry shop and there is one near my house. It is available at a shop which is just a stone throw away from my house. It is made of cotton which is comfortable and suitable to wear in a weather like ours. It is made of leather which is long lasting. It is made of silk which is soft and natural. She/ He likes the material as it feels soft on her/his skin. The facilities provided are interesting and useful. The accommodation provided is grand and beneficial. The food served is tasty. I love the food served as they are hot and spicy. We love hot and spicy food so this menu/ meal would be perfect for us. I would love to try the activities offered. The activities are appealing and I would like to try them. I am sure my father would find the activities offered interesting. The ingredients used are fresh and appealing. The ingredients used would tickle my taste buds. The weather is cool and refreshing. It would be perfect to take a stroll in that weather. The beach would be sunny and swimming in the sea would be refreshing.

Question 3 1. Read the instruction carefully. Names might be given. 2. Note the tense used. Extract the verbs to help you. 3. Use past tense when writing about an incident or an event. Use the present tense form when writing about ones hobby, occupation, daily activities or facts. 4. Try not to change the tense as this might lead to mistakes. 5. Introduce new words. Make your product interesting. E.g : walk strolled, pranced, strutted, marched. 6. You do not have to use all the words given. 7. This section requires your creativity. Use idioms, proverbs and metaphors to make your story interesting.

8. Avoid grammatical and structural mistakes. These are major mistakes that will lower your band. 9. Avoid spelling and punctuation errors. 10. A simple rule to remember a complete sentence must have at least one subject and one predicate. 11. Make sure your writing is legible and neat. Again, the basic rule of constructing a sentence applies here.
