Make-Your-Own Science Game Project

Details & Guidelines

Driving Question:

How can we design an engaging and educational

board game to help students learn how DNA impacts our physical
traits?

Project Overview: Your final product will include the following:

Game Board: Your game board should be neatly decorated and it

should include:
o Theme (i.e. sports, music, favorite actor, anime, band, hobby,
etc)
o Game Title
o Start/Finish
17 Game Cards: Each card should be numbered and have a neatly
written or typed science problem for people to solve (see required
concepts below). You can have either one deck of cards or you can
divide the deck into easy, medium, and difficult questions. You
should decorate these cards in a way that matches the theme of
your game.
The following science concepts must be included:
10.
Dominant allele
1. Chromosome
11.
Recessive allele
2. Asexual reproduction (basic definition)
12.
Phenotype
3. Sexual reproduction (basic definition)
13.
Genotype
4. Meiosis
14.
Punnett square
5. Cell differentiation
15.
Mutation
6. Trait
16.
Genome
7. Heredity
17.
DNA (deoxyribonucleic
8. Genetics
acid)
9. Gene

Answer Sheet: This sheet will have the answers to your 17 game
cards so that you can quickly check a players answers as you are
playing the game. Answers should be numbered to correspond to
the card numbers.

Rules of the Game Worksheet: This sheet will describe your game
and will give a detailed description of the rules so everyone will
know how to play it.
4 - 5 Playing Pieces: These pieces will be used for players to
progress along the game board during play. These must be
originally made and cannot be taken from an existing game.

Project Duration
The project will last ~ 5 weeks.

Assessment:
Final assessment will be with a rubric.

Presentation Day Details:

- Refer to rubric that has been used in class for presentation
requirements (time frame, clothing, etc)
- The only required visual is your game.

Focus Concepts:
- You will be asked level 1, level 2 and level 3 questions about the 17
focus concepts covered in the game cards. To help prepare you, you will
get the opportunity to play your own game in class, as well as games
from other teams.

California State Content Standards:

2. A typical cell of any organism contains genetic instructions that specify its
traits. Those traits may be modified by environmental influences. As a basis
for understanding this concept:
a. Students know the differences between the life cycles and
reproduction methods of sexual and asexual organisms.
b. Students know sexual reproduction produces offspring that
inherit half their genes from each parent.
c. Students know an inherited trait can be determined by one or
more genes.
d. Students know plant and animal cells contain many thousands of
different genes and typically have two copies of every gene. The two

copies (or alleles) of the gene may or may not be identical, and one
may be dominant in determining the phenotype while the other is
recessive.
e. Students know DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic
material of living organisms and is located in the chromosomes of
each cell.
