Glocalisation and the Anthropology of Post-colonial Society in Africa: Some Nigerian Examples
P-JEzeh1 1.UniversityofNigeria,Sociology&Anthropology,Nsukka,Nigeria pitjazi@yahoo.com Inaglobalizingworldthereistheneedforreconciliationoftheknowledgesystemsofpre-colonial andpost-colonialAfrica,orputdifferentlytheindigenousandexogenousknowledgesystems.After thedisruptionthathasbeencausedbyslavery,Muslim/Christianproselytisation,andcolonisation, Africanandothersocietiesthathavehadsimilarexperiencesmaynoteffectivelycompeteinthe contemporaryworldunlesstheyreconcilethetwoknowledgesystems:thelocalandtheglobal.The mistakethatisbeingmadewiththecurrenteffortsatglobalisationisthatitseemstobebasedonthe assumptionthatAfricacansomehowmakeaculturalquantumleapintotheunifiedglobalsystem.At best,whatisbeingwitnessedisamisapplicationoftheacceptanceofthematerialaspectsofthenew system.Noprogressisbeingmadeinadaptationtotheepistemicsthatunderpinsordrivesthenew system.Thereisadisconnectbetweentheknowledgesystemsoftheoldandthenewsystems. Knowledgebeingaculturalproduct,itsincrementormodificationmustproceedfromwhatisalready knowntowhatisexpected.Thestrategythatappearstobeadvisableiswhathasbeentermed glocalisation.Glocalisationhasbeendescribedasglobalisationofthelocalandlocalisationofthe global. My proposition is that the two systems can be reconciled instead of attempting the impossibilityofjettisoninghome-grownsystemsthatsocietieshavebeenusedtoformillennia.The globalsystemcanmakeaspeedierprogressbyincorporatingthelocalsystem,andthelocalsystem mayendupbeingstrongerbyadaptingtotheglobalsystem.Ihavebeentryingtouseethnographic modelstoinvestigatethisproposition.MycasestudieshavebeentheOrringandtheIgboofsoutheasternNigeriaandsofarmyexperienceseemstosupportthisposition.
