Crocheted Aran Square

12" afghan square Materials: Worsted Weight yarn MC - grey CC - dk. grey (Sample used Plymouth Yarn Encore) Size H (5.0 mm) hook 3 - 1" buttons Needle & thread Stitch definition: hdc - half double crochet - yo, insert needle, yo, pull through all 3 loops. tr - treble crochet - yo 2x, insert needle, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops. fpdc - worked on the right side with right side facing - double crochet in the stitch below fptr - worked on the right side while working with back side facing - front post treble crochet treble crochet in front part of treble crochet 2 rows below. Sk - skip Bottom Block: Ch 41. Row 1: Hdc 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. 39 hdc (right side) Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in each st across. Row 3 and all odd number rows: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in each st across. Row 4: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in next 2 hdc, fptr in next hdc 2 rows below, 2 hdc, sk next 4 hdc, fptr in next 2 hdc 2 rows below, fptr in front of last 2 fptr made in the 2 hdc before the hdc just stitched 2 rows below, 2 hdc, fptr in next 2 hdc 2 rows below, 2 hdc; for the central Plait you skip the 9 hdc on the current row and do the following: skip 3 hdc 2 rows below, fptr in next 3 hdc 2 rows below, 3 fptr in previously skipped 3 hdc 2 rows below, 3 fptr in the last 3 hdc 2 rows below in this 9 stitch pattern; 2 hdc, fptr in next 2 hdc 2 rows below, 2 hdc, sk next 4 hdc, 2 fptr in next 2 hdc 2 rows below, 2 fptr in front of last 2 fptr in the 2 hdc before the hdc just stitched 2 rows below, 2 hdc, fptr in hdc 2 rows below, 2 hdc. Row 6: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in next 2 hdc, fptr in next fptr, 2 hdc, sk 2 fptr, fptr in the next 2 fptr, working in front of last 2 fptr just made, fptr in the skipped 2 fptr, 2 hdc, 2 fptr, 2 hdc, Plait - 3 fptr in first 3 fptr, 3 fptr in last 3 fptr, working behind last 3 fptr - fptr in the middle 3 fptr; 2 hdc, 2 fptr, 2 hdc, sk 2 fptr, fptr in the next 2 fptr, working in front of last 2 fptr just made, fptr in the skipped 2 fptr, 2 hdc, 1 fptr, 2 hdc.

Repeat rows 6 through 8 for 4 more times. Last 4 rows - Hdc in each hdc . Top Flap: Ch 40. Row 1: Sc in 2nd sc from hook, and in each ch across. 39 sc. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next sc, fpdc around base of next sc* - repeat * to * across, sc. Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 6 sc, ch 3, sk 3 sc, 9 sc, ch 3, sk 3 sc, 9 sc, ch 3, sk 3 sc, 6 sc. Row 5: Ch 1, turn, (sc in next sc, fpdc) 3x, sc in next 3 ch, (sc in next sc, fpdc) 5x, sc in next 3 ch, (sc in next sc, fpdc) 5x, sc in next 3 ch, (sc in next sc, fpdc) 3x, sc. Row 6: Repeat row 2. Row 7: Ch 1, turn, *sc, fpdc* repeat * to * across ending with sc. Rows 8 through 19: Repeat row 2. Finish off. With needle and thread, attach buttons at top of the 3 main cabled sections. Attach top flap.
