Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility

CHAPTER 1

1.0 DEFINITION OF RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY

Respect is very importance in our life. For example, children are taught to respect their parents,
teachers, and elders, school rules and traffic laws, family and cultural traditions, other people's
feelings and rights, their country's flag and leaders, the truth and people's differing opinions.
According to Wikipedia, respect is esteem or a sense of the worth or excellence of, a person, a
personal quality, ability, or a manifestation of a personal quality or ability. Esteem for, or a sense of
the worth, or excellence, of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a
manifestation of a personal quality or ability.

When come to value respect for such things, when someone older, they may shake their heads at
people who seem not to have learned to respect them. They develop great respect for people they
consider exemplary and lose respect for those they discover to be clay-footed, and so they may try to
respect only those who are truly worthy of their respect. They may also come to believe that, at
some level, all people are worthy of respect. They may learn that jobs and relationships become
unbearable if they receive no respect in them.

We may also learn that how our lives go depends every bit as much on whether we respect
ourselves. The value of self-respect may be something we can take for granted, or we may discover
how very important it is when our self-respect is threatened, or we lose it and have to work to regain
it, or we have to struggle to develop or maintain it in a hostile environment. Some people find that
finally being able to respect themselves is what matters most about getting off welfare, kicking a
disgusting habit, or defending something they value; others, sadly, discover that life is no longer
worth living if self-respect is irretrievably lost. It is part of everyday wisdom that respect and self-
respect are deeply connected, that it is difficult if not impossible both to respect others if we don't
respect ourselves and to respect ourselves if others don't respect us.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility

Meanwhile, by referring the Wikipedia, responsibility assumption is a doctrine in the personal

growth field holding that each individual has substantial or total responsibility for the events and
circumstances that befall them in their life. The term responsibility assumption thus has a
specialized meaning beyond the general concept of taking responsibility for something, and is not to
be confused with the general notion of making an assumption that a concept such as "responsibility"
exists.

Being responsible begins with respect. We must respect our self enough to conduct our life in a
manner that will always ensure that our self-respect remains intact. Self-respect is the glue that holds
the individual together. If we have no respect, we will not even understand self-responsibility, much
less practice it.

If we refuse to accept responsibility for our self, there is little hope that we will ever accept
responsibility for anything else. It is a vicious downward spiral from there. Everything and everyone
we come in contact with will be affected by our failure to accept self responsibility.

Self-responsibility is what sustains the individual and holds the group together. Self-responsibility
demands that every decision we make and every action we take is in our own best interest, not with
a view towards selfish desires but from the standpoint of self-respect. What is good for our self-
respect is often uncomfortable, but it is always the right thing to do.

Respect for others is what sustains the group and holds a community together. If we have respect for
others it means we will always try to do what is right concerning our interaction with them even if
that means ending their miserable existence. We won't cheat them, we won't lie to them, and we
won't attempt to force them to our will. If they refuse to act rightly, we deal with them in a fair and
just manner. Knowing this, others will respect us and want to interact with us in the same manner.
They will feel comfortable and confident in all their dealings with us.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
Respect and responsibility are also suitable being apply in working environment. Sime Darby is one
of the companies which are use respect and responsibility as one of their core value. At Sime Darby
they train their worker to respect and treat each person as they would like to be treated, share
knowledge responsibly and take ownership and accountability for their business decisions and
results. Beside that, they will put their effort towards building a socially responsible organization.

CHAPTER 2
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility

2.0 HOW TO INCORPORATE RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY IN SIME DARBY?

According to corporate culture of Sime Darby, respect and responsibility is one of four core values
in this organization. The concept incorporate respect and responsibility in Sime Darby focused on
the respect and treat each person as Sime Darby would like to be treated which respect is generally
regarded as having a behavioral component. In respecting an object, Sime Darby often considers it
be making legitimate claims on conduct as well as thoughts and feelings and are disposed to behave
appropriately. It is appropriate behavior includes refraining from certain treatment of the object or
acting only in particular ways in connection with it, ways that are regarded as fitting, deserved by, or
owed to the object. And there are very many ways to respect things such as keeping our distance
from them, helping them, praising or emulating them, obeying or abiding by them.

In order to incorporate the element of respect in this organization the respect also know as
responsive relation, and ordinary discourse about respect identifies several key elements of the
response, including attention, deference, judgment, acknowledgment, valuing, and behavior. With
these elements of the response, it will encourage the value of respect in the each person in the Sime
Darby organization and it is because the concept of respect is about object-generated rather than
wholly subject-generated, something that is owed to, called for, deserved, elicited, or claimed by the
object.

Mean while the concept of responsibility in Sime Darby is about sharing knowledge responsibly and
take ownership and accountability for business decisions and results. The notion of responsibility it’s
like to be personal responsibility and shared responsibility which it is involved two more purely
individualistic counterparts, almost always a notion of moral, rather than purely causal,
responsibility.

But, unlike its two more purely individualistic counterparts, it does not associate either causal
responsibility or blameworthiness with discrete individuals or locate the source of moral
responsibility in the free will of individual moral agents. Instead, it associates both causal
responsibility and blameworthiness with groups and locates the source of moral responsibility in the
collective actions taken by these groups understood as collectives.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
To incorporate the responsibility in Sime Darby, first controversy must focuses on the relationship
between collective responsibility, on the one hand, and the values of individual liberty, justice, and
non-suffering, on the other. The second controversy also places the group-based nature of collective
responsibility at the center of our attention. But it does not, like is normative counterpart,
concentrate on the consequences of ascribing collective responsibility in practice. Instead, it
concentrates on the metaphysical foundations of collective responsibility and its coherence as an
intellectual construct. Mean while the third controversy, interestingly enough, is not really about the
moral responsibility of groups at all, even though it is couched in the language of collective moral
responsibility. Instead, it is about the moral responsibility of individuals who belong to groups in
cases where these groups are themselves thought to be morally responsible for particular cases of
harm.

Sime Darby also accepted that their role and the responsibility of their members as citizens are to
help improve society by taking a proactive stance in their societal roles. It can also imply that
corporations have an implicit obligation to give back to society such as implementing the
Management Apprenticeship Program to fresh graduated students and also to unemployment which
this program providing soft skills and giving working experience to all apprentices involved.
Collectively, Sime Darby will put our effort towards building a socially responsible organization.

2.1 HOW TO APPLY RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY IN OURSELVES

Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
Being responsible begins with respect. You must respect yourself enough to conduct your life in a
manner that will always ensure that your self-respect remains intact. Self-respect is the glue that
holds the individual together. If you have no self-respect, you will not even understand self-
responsibility, much less practice it. If you refuse to accept responsibility for yourself, there is little
hope that you will ever accept responsibility for anything else. It is a vicious downward spiral from
there. Everything and everyone you come in contact with will be affected by your failure to accept
self responsibility.

Self-responsibility is what sustains the individual and holds the group together. Self-responsibility
demands that every decision you make and every action you take is in your own best interest, not
with a view towards selfish desires but from the standpoint of self-respect. What is good for your
self-respect is often uncomfortable, but it is always the right thing to do.

Those who have their own self-respect and know the burden and joy of self-responsibility will
recognize the same in you, as you will in them. When you make an honest mistake, they won't hold
it against you and will likely stand with you to correct it. Because you always try to do what is right,
when they are in need you will rush to their aid and when you are in need they will come to yours.
This is how self-respect and self-responsibility helps to hold a group together - starting with the
family, expanding to friends and ultimately to complete strangers.

Doing what is right is always inclusive, when it comes to others, and never exclusive. It builds your
self-respect, encourages respect for others and brings the respect of others to you. It can change the
world by changing the way people feel about themselves but it cannot be faked. If a person has no
self-respect, they will not gain the respect of others no matter how rich or beautiful or powerful or
glamorous they may appear to be. At best, all they will ever receive is envy, jealousy, fear and, in the
end, pity.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
Respect for others is what sustains the group and holds a community together. If you have respect
for others it means you will always try to do what is right concerning your interaction with them -
even if that means ending their miserable existence. Doing what is right, beginning with self respect
and ending with respect for others is a shield, of sorts, which protects you from all manner of harm.
It won't stop a concerted attack by evil, but will protect and prevent all but the most determined.

Most people succumb to evil through their own actions. Usually it through lust or greed, but often
through jealousy and anger. The right thinking of self-respect is the only shield an individual has
when confronted with these emotions. YOU are responsible for your hygiene, your health, your
actions and inaction, and the result of those actions or inaction. When you delegate your self-
responsibility to others, you voluntarily relinquish your rights.

As a parent, you have the responsibility to teach your children to be self-responsible and to guide
them in the way of being a responsible adult. You have the responsibility to monitor their actions,
correct their behavior, and to protect and defend them from others as well as from themselves.

As a child, you have the responsibility to respect your fellow family members - however flawed they
may be. You do not have to agree with them. You do not even have to like them. You need to learn,
however, to accept and respect them as human beings.

Every person is a human being, which must be cherished and respected, but not every human being
is a person (or perhaps, more accurately, "personality") deserving the same. You can respect the
human being without pandering to a wrong-minded personality. An abusive or destructive family
member, for instance, is difficult to even like, much less cherish - but they are still a human being.

They were not always abusive or destructive - they've simply lost their way. They have no self-
respect and seek to assuage their own self-loathing through impulsive and harmful actions. These
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
actions may have distorted their psyche beyond the point of reclamation or redemption. Then again,
if they can only be made to see that it is only their lack of self-respect that compels them, if they can
be guided and taught to choose rightly, they may learn to respect themselves and change their ways.

If you cannot learn to have respect for your own family members, there is little hope of learning to
respect others. Part of respecting your family members is accepting responsibility for them. If a
member of your family does harm to another, it is your responsibility to see to it that they, or you,
remedy the situation to the extent possible. This means that it is in your own best interest to see that
your parents, your siblings and your extended family members develop and maintain a healthy sense
of self-respect and right-thinking. Your own self-respect will demand it of you.

Similarly, if a family member is harmed, falls upon hard times, is in danger, or is unable to care for
themselves, you must step up to aid them - not in a begrudging way, but with honor and sincerity.
This is not charity; it is only the right thing to do. If the situation is reversed and a family member
comes to your aid, you must accept this aid with equal honor and sincerity, knowing that your family
has no other choice if they are to maintain their own self-respect.

As a member of society, you treat each person with the respect they deserve as a fellow human
being. Again, it is the human being you are according respect, not necessarily the person or
personality. You deal with them in a fair and just manner, regardless of their willingness or ability to
do the same with you.

This does not mean that you allow them to take advantage of you, only that you refrain from
attempting to deal falsely with them. Not dealing falsely with them may include having to use force
to resist or subdue arrest and incarcerate them. Or put them down. The amount of force you use must
always be fair and just and in proportion to the threat of force being applied against you. If this
course is followed, whether the courts agree with you or not, you do no harm to your self-respect.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility

2.2 WHY SHOULD APPLY RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY IN SIME DARBY?

There are many reasons why Sime Darby should apply respect & responsibility values in their
company. The respect & responsibility values could be continuously reinforced in order to ensure
that the employees adhere to the right work culture. If they insist on top quality products or
performance all the time, they should eventually achieve them. For instance, relationship between
top management and lower management in term of advices, encouragement and guidance. Respect
& responsibility are very important to build a good teamwork and bring out a great work
environment in Sime Darby. Therefore, they can complete their work or task perfectly and smoothly.
Implement respect & responsibility towards their organization will moves themselves into the fray
and positions themselves to make a difference. When their organization takes responsibility for their
contribution to a bad situation, it will changes how we see the organization’s role in the current crisis
and also how we see the organization’s role in creating a better situation.

By taking responsibility, Sime Darby shifts themselves away from being a victim or a bystander and
towards being an influential participant. The organizations that take responsibility for their part in a
bad situation can learn from this experience to become more responsible in other areas and at later
times. Taking responsibility in one arena can be the first step towards creating a culture of
responsibility. In an organization with a culture of responsibility, members share the belief that what
they do has an impact. This is critical for helping organization members stay motivated and engaged
in the organization’s work. Taking responsibility gives our organization the energy to move on to
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
problem-solving. Our organization knows, deep down, when it is culpable. But, if our organization
is denying its responsibility, it is wasting a lot of precious energy– energy that could be better used
to make a positive difference. By giving up its claims of innocence and accepting responsibility, our
organization frees up energy that can be used to solve problems, create new opportunities, and even
help other organizations.

2.3 WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF DOES NOT APPLY RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY?

In the workplace, everyone should have qualities of respect and responsibility whether they are
employees or employers. If those qualities do not exist within themselves, it would be difficult for
them to develop a comfortable and sustainable working environment. If this happen, it will affect
staffs as well company’s reputation. The organization’s values could be continuously reinforced in
order to ensure that the employees adhere to the right work culture. Respects are comes from
respecting others. This can be manifested in trusting subordinates to take up responsibilities.
Internally, delegating responsibilities is different from distributing duties. Employers normally load
someone capable and reliable with all sorts of work simply because they know that he or she
delivers. But time and again, they tend to forget that either others will be jealous of this person, or he
or she will feel that he or she is unnecessarily being overburdened with work. This will demotivate
“the goose that lays the golden egg.”

Everyone in the workplace, irrespective of their position, deserves to be treated with respect and
responsibility. No one should suffer bullying or harassment while going about their work. This can
put at risk the health, safety and wellbeing of all employees. Employers have responsibilities under
legislation, including the responsibility to provide a safe workplace. Workplace bullying, or
harassment, is repeated unreasonable behavior directed toward an employee, or group of employees,
that creates a risk to health and safety. That unreasonable behavior will slowly but surely erode the
level of performance of the whole organization.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
Besides, the quality of respect and responsibility also important to the external needs which includes
environment, customers and community. An organization should balance and integrate the demands
of economic performance, social responsibility and environmental stewardship. Without qualities of
respect and responsibility to those needs, an organization will lose the power of sustainability in
their marketplace. Organization cannot expect the customers and community to respect their
businesses when they are not respect them.

2.4 WHAT ACHIEVEMENT OF SIME DARBY SHOWS THERE IS RESPECT AND

RESPONSIBILITY?

In creating their own Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) foundation, Sime Darby seeks to
highlights one of the core value that they proud of, which in this case the value of respect and
responsibility. With this particular value, Sime Darby sailed to the sea of corporate world with great
excellence. This value enhances the performance such as ethical and transparent business practices.
SIme darby have a very big responsibility to shoulder to live up to their brand values of “Developing
Sustainable Future”. They come up with guidelines through Its Group Policies and Authorities for

they believed in practicing their proud core value.

rehabilitation and restoration has made tremendous impact to the local animal species, especially the
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
Orang Utan habitat. This effort is to ensure the continuous rejuvenation of the area and the funds
was used to finance the project administration, restore and revive the habitat of the forest flora and
fauna. With this wonderful programme, Sime Darby was awarded notable achievement in
Environmentl Performance, Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award.

Sime Darby was very concerned about the environment welfare which shows in conserving a special

platform for research on the mangrove ecosystem and coastal zone management in Carey Island.
They believed that it is part of their corporate social responsibility and efforts to keep the
environment sustainable. While remain concerned with yields and profits, they were equally
concerned about the environment and the impact of their business has on its environment

Besides that, together with Wild Asia, they replanted trees along the Tanah Merah Estate river banks
in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Special way in replanting the trees was conducted to preserve the
ecosystem of the habitat and further studies are being done to monitor the success of the project.
Then the study was further extended to Sime Darby Property’s township where Green Trails or
pocket forest parks are being created in specific area. Therefore, Denai Alam township is Selangor is
the proved that they are committed and determined in what they do best.

Moreover, Sime Darby also led another success project when they launched its Sustainable Island
Programme with collaboration with Wild Asia. The project covers many islands around Malaysia
including Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Tioman, Pulau Redang and Pulau Aur.

But the most important things that Sime Darby preserve their core value well is because of the
management’s commitment towards the well being of the workers. Thus, many achievements were
not impossible to attain and should be emulated by others.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility

sustainable future real to everyone, knowledge is an important power that man has to gather to be

the power to everyone by contributing to community. They contributed in many ways by involving
scholarships, adoption of schools, financial assistance and vocational training. The programme were
conducted as ways to help the new generations to be more knowledgeable and competent. One of
their successful programme was PINTAR School Adoption Programme that began in 2006, where
Sime Darby plays their role in nurturing and educating the younger society in the country.

Sime Darby gives their best attention to the younger generation by giving their appreciation through
Sime Darby Employees’ Children Education Excellence Awards (ECEEA) to recognize the
achievements of children of Sime Darby employees.

2.4.4 Community

With the value of respect and responsibility, Sime Darby always put community as their highest
priority due to their business was run relying on the consumers’ demands. So, they actively involved
with the communities expectations. One of the most important programmes they manage to done
was the establishment of patrol units for Subang Jaya, USJ, Putra Heights, Bandar Bukit Raja and
Ara Damansara, Selangor which is called as ‘Unit Peronda Sime Darby’.

Sime darby also take good care for their employees welfare including their families. Funds were
allocated to finance the renewing of the employee quarters, improved school facilities on estates and
provide adequate infrastructure for estate communities.

They launch boat service for children living on its Sandakan Estates. Its a school boat service –
which uses a 46-footer fiberglass boat powered by a 150hp engine and will be operated by
employees of Sandakan Bay Palm Oil Mill. It was officially launched by Sime Darby Plantations &
Agribusiness Division. This service is one of Sime Darby’s corporate social responsibility (CSR)
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility

adopted three Tamil schools located within its estates

Sime Darby has also contributed RM260,000 towards building two additional classroom blocks for
students of SMK Bakun Sungai Asap. This effort aid by Sime Darby will cater for an extra 210
students who will join SMK Bakun Sungai Asap in January 2009 to ensure that the communities in

2.5 HOW SIME DARBY IMPLEMENT RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY THROUGH

THEIR EMPLOYEES

Sime Darby is an organization that emphasizes more on their employees and society as it is like a
long term investment in order to create a great environment. It is important for them to treat others
the way they want to be treated as it is a sign of respect. From here, we can see that Sime Darby had
put a lot and continuous effort in delivering its responsibility in building a great sustainable future
not just for the society as overall but especially towards their employees.
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
There are many programme conducted internally in order to give chances to their employees to
enhance their capabilities and skills. The programme is design in such a way that their employees
are able to explore and develop their talent especially in leadership management and also indirectly
build a strong relationship among their employees. Besides that, the programme are build to ensure
there is a great successor for every position and the successors are ready to execute their task
confidently when the time comes.

For example, internally, Sime Darby through its Business School had conducted a Management
Development Programme (MDP) that enables selected candidates from executive up to senior
manager position to attend the programme in order to be promoted. MDP contains Executive
Development Programme (EDP), Young Manager Development Programme (YMDP), Middle
Manager Development Programme (MMDP), and Senior Manager Development Programme
(SMDP). Such programme acts as a platform for the candidates who consist of Sime Darby
employees to brush up their talent as leader and also manage their teams in order to optimize
resources to achieve top-notch results. In this particular programme, the participants are oblige to do
an assignment that must be carry out throughout the year and really required full commitment by the
participants. The participants still have to carry out their normal duty while executing the task
required by the programme. From this, it is really like a challenge for the participants to see whether
they are able to find balance between the assignment and their works and also to deliver excellence
results for both.

As in crucial times, it brings the best in people and that is what Sime Darby wanted to do. Other
than that, the programme enables the participants to develop their networking as they come from
different divisions in Sime Darby. From this, it shows that Sime Darby had carry out its duty in
educating, exploring and ultimately enhancing its people’s talent.

Besides playing the role of responsibility internally, Sime Darby also had implement programme
that discover talent from outside of the organization. Here where the Management Apprenticeship
Programme (MAP) plays it role. This programme conducted by Sime Darby is for its future
employees. The programme focusing on fresh graduates by giving them the best opportunities to
gather knowledge and gain experience in the real working environment. The apprentices are
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
considering as employee-to-be as some of them will be absorb to be permanent staff in Sime Darby.
Only the best are selected thus this demand excellence performance by the apprentices.

From the examples given above, it shows that Sime Darby is committed in delivering its
responsibility towards its employees and it is for the best result in developing sustainable future. The
steps taken by Sime Darby also shows its respect towards the manpower that it has by giving them
chance to grow with depth knowledge and skills needed to take up and overcome challenges to
come.

2.6 EXAMPLE OF RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY IN SIME DARBY

Sime Darby apply its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework by enhance the

Sembilan. The trees are planted in a special way to revive the river and its biodiversity. Sime Darby

2.6.2 Education
Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
Sime Darby realizes education as an important part of making sustainable futures real for everyone.
Therefore, so many programmes that Sime Darby involved such as scholarships, adoption of
schools, financial assistance and vocational training to ensure that our younger generation are more
knowledgeable and competent. For example in Sime Darby Employees’ Children Education

There are 270 children have been awarded cash prizes for their excellent performance in the Ujian
