Algebra 1 Syllabus

Spring, 2014- Semester 2 Instructor: Ms. Haugen Email: Khaugen@willamette.edu Website: http://kristenhaugen.weebly.com Two of the primary objectives of this course are: 1. Learning mathematics requires students to actively think about what they know and to relate that to the new ideas to be learned. Developing the ability to reason mathematically is essential to success in mathematics and in life, so it is an important part of how the math courses will be taught this year. 2. Grasp that the ability to communicate and work in a group is essential for any job, even math/computer science/engineering/medical careers. Since this is the case, techniques for group, verbal and written communication must be practiced throughout all courses To be successful, students must: Actively contribute in whole class and study teamwork and discussion. Complete or attempt all assigned problems and turn in assignments on time. Check and correct problems on assignments based on answers and solutions provided to the class. Ask for help from their study team or the teacher. Take notes and keep a well-organized notebook. Not distract other students from their opportunity to learn. Students should always make their talk accountable in their study team. Equipment and Supplies: Text: CPM Algebra Connections We have a classroom set of this text. We were also just given codes for each student to access this text as an E-book. Classroom Guidelines: Come to class prepared and on time. Expect to participate the entire period. Be considerate of others. Respect their right to ask questions and learn. Be responsible for your materials, classroom and school. Follow the guidelines set by the school and district disciplinary code. Remember CELL PHONES and all electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom. We have a classroom set of calculators if students need to use these, because their phone calculator is NOT an option. Group work will use the 90 / 10 rule(90% math / 10% social)

Grading Policy: Homework and Teamwork will be based on Total Points assigned. Quizzes, Tests and Final will be graded using the Rubric below. Letter grades are then assigned according to the following scale.
LETTER GRADE 90-100% 80-89% 70-79% 60-69% Below 60% A B C D F Percentage Breakdown of Class Work Homework, Teamwork 25% Test/Quizzes 55% Final 20%

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given periodically and may be without warning. Students may retake any quiz one time for a higher grade. If absent, you are expected to make-up on your own time, either before or after school. Tests and Final: There will be a test at the end of each chapter. There will also be a final given at the end of the Semester. Make-up Work: Make-up work will be allowed for excused absences. Students may make up work within that 6-week time period. Once the 6-week grades have come out, students may NOT go back and complete missing work. Class/Homework: Each day there may be core problems that must be completed in class in teams. Homework will be assigned a couple times a week with due dates given as the homework is assigned. Homework will be graded on accuracy. Returned homework can be corrected for additional points. Late work is not accepted. Students must make arrangements with the teacher to make-up missed work. Attendance: Participation and attendance in Algebra are very important, as knowledge of the material is necessary for success in learning new skills. Both class grades and dropout rates show significant evidence of a direct correlation between consistent attendance and achievement. I will be available before school from 7:10-7:25 in portable 1 and after school TuesdaysFridays until 3:15 for additional help. Please come in and ask questions or get additional help during these times. If you would like to get help during a time not posted, please make arrangements with me.
