My two field experiences were very different from each because the schools have different discipline policies. At Aquinas Middle School an infraction system is used called Honor Level. There are four levels within the Honor Level (1-4). Level one is no infractions, level two is 2-11 infractions, level three is 12-20 infractions and level four is 21+ infractions. Students can get infractions for anything from homework to tardies to behavior. One infraction is kind of like a warning but it goes on their Honor Level record. Three infractions are a detention and five infractions are also a detention but reserved for the bad stuff (cheating, lying, yelling at a teacher, etc.). The infractions drop off the students record after a certain amount of time (7 days for 1 infraction, 14 days for 3-5 infractions). Different activities happen throughout the year that are related to what Honor Level the students are on such as socials, pep rallies, breakfasts, auctions, and recesses. They cannot participate if they are on Honor Level 3 or 4. Students are also rewarded with auction bucks (to use at the auctions) throughout the year when they are on Honor Level 1 and 2. There were little behavioral issues in the classes I was observing, but had a few small incidents. In one of the sections, a student continually repeats words under his breath in attempt to make other students laugh. He usually got a warning or two when he is being disruptive and that usually deterred him from continuing the disruptive behaviors. In the three class periods I was in with him, he acquired one infraction after being given two warnings. At Central High School, most students followed classroom policies and procedures, but from my observation, I believe in general that students were very outspoken and talkative in class. Sometimes it became disruptive and the teacher would use different techniques to quiet them down. Some of the techniques were to stop lecturing until the students stopped being disruptive and if that did not work the teacher wouldnt subtly call out the students name and continue lecturing. These two strategies worked almost all of the time. One major issue the teacher had was in a Sports & Marketing class full of sophomore boys. They are generally a loud class, but one day in particular the school had a function going on and some students got a free soda for participation. In the classroom, food and drinks are to be consumed before class starts. A group of about 10-12 boys were being very loud and throwing their soda cans across the room into a metal trashcan creating loud noises. The teacher asked all students with food and drinks to finish in the hall or throw it away. As lecture started students kept being loud and saying comments under their breath. They also kept clapping every time the teacher said a certain word. The teacher moved students so the loud group was separated, but this did not seem to work for all students. As class continued, 8 of the students got kicked out of class and ended up having to do an extra assignment for a project they were assigned.
