ST1 C02: ANALYTICAL TOOLS FOR STATISTICS

Time : 1 hour

Total weights: 12

Part A (Weightage 1 for each question) 1. Examine whether the quadratic form x 2 2 xy + 3 y 2 is positive definite. 2. Define (i) Index of a quadratic form and (ii) signature of a quadratic form. 3. If A is positive definite, then show that A > 0 . Part B (Weightage 2 for each question) 4. If X ' AX is a real quadratic form, then show that there exist an orthogonal 2 2 transformation X = PY which transform X ' AX 1 y12 + 2 y2 + ... + n yn 5. Explain the spectral decomposition of a real symmetric matrix and state its properties. Part C (Weightage 5) 6. State and prove a necessary and sufficient condition for positive definiteness of a quadratic form.
