The MESG apparatus is capable of determining the g0 value (maximum experimental safe gap) and the associated g100

value required for the classification of gases, vapours and mists. Furthermore the apparatus can be applied to check the accuracy of a given gas concentration. In order to attain the required accuracy, a stepping motor with gear transmission adjusts the gap size. During 80 steps the stepping motor makes 1 m. Thus the gap size can be adjusted with an accuracy of 1 m. The actual measuring process is completed with the purging of the chamber after the measurement, aiming at the removal of the needless combustions products. All the elements required for the operation of the apparatus are assembled in only one compact unit. As soon as the gas mixture required for the test is in- and outlet and the electrical connection is made, the apparatus is ready for operation. The gas mixer producing the accurate gas mixture is the integral part of the apparatus. The measuring process starts with the pressing of one button only; in semi-automatic operation mode the operator has to make ignition, while in automatic operation mode it is not necessary either. The apparatus will run down the measure-

ments of the preliminarily determined number and evaluates the obtained results. The whole process is controlled by microprocessor, whereto an external computer can be connected thus providing for the possibility of the remote-control of the MESG apparatus. By means of the remote-controlling software the parameters obtained during the measurements can be saved then made available at any time.
