. She is always waiting for a guy named Earnest come and proposes to her. To compare with Gwendolen, she is younger, less fashionable and less sophisticated than her, but she can talk quite sarcastically. Cecily and Gwendolen hated each other while a misunderstanding happened between them until they found out the truth. Cecily is engaged with Algernon. l Time and place The scene is happening at the afternoon in summer at the garden of Jacks country house in Hertfordshire, London, England. In this scene, Cecily and Gwendolen are talking in front of a tea table, later on they have teatime. The costume that Cecily is wearing is a white, elegant dress that has covered her whole lower body. The costume of Gwendolen is black camisole with black underskirt. Both of their costumes show the period they are living in is Victorian Era, which further explains that they are living in England. l Situation The situation of the scene is that Gwendolen runs into Cecily and misunderstand that they are engaged with the same guy Ernest; the fact is there are two different guys, Jack and Algernon who proposed to Gwendolen and Cecily under the false name Earnest. Two women therefore start an argument to prove themselves as the fiance of Ernest which is the tension of the scene. l Action When Cecily is telling Gwendolen that she is engaged with Earnest, Mr Ernest Worthing and I are engaged to be married. She grabs Gwendolens arms to show her excitement. When Cecily is angry, for example Do you suggest, Miss Fairfaxhow dare you? This is no time for wearing the shallow mask of manner she emphasizes the word such as dare by speaking the word heavier. Also, when she is trying to say something irony like I suppose that is why you live in town? she smiles sweetly to tell the audience that she is proud of making sarcasm on Gwendolen. l Mood The mood at the beginning was harmonious and peaceful until Gwendolen and Cecily found out that they might be engaged with the same guy. The mood turns tension; Cecily and Gwendolen start to sarcasm each other.
