Moisture in the insulation material has the following undesirable consequences: Increase of corrosion danger The ingress of moisture into the insulation system enhances corrosion. Also, the penetrating moisture may lead to an accumulation of corrosion-enhancing agents in the insulation system, e. g. chloride ions, which may lead to stresscorrosion cracking with stainless austenitic steels. Increase of the thermal conductivity Experiments have proven that a moisture intake of 5 vol.-% may lead to an increase of the thermal conductivity of up to 80% (see Figure 1). Generation of material changes With some insulants, moisture may lead to irreparable damages or total destruction, e. g. with microporous insulation materials, calcium silicate, cellular glass, calciummagnesium silicate. 2.2 Ingress of surface water (rain or splash water)
Planungsfehler, z.
Mistakes in the design, e. g. wrongly placed junctions, seams and fittings, missing flashings, but also damages in the cladding allow for the ingress of surface water. A further cause can be found in the defective execution of the cladding. 2.3 Condensation water in the insulation in the context of water-vapour diffusion processes
The accumulation of moisture occurs in installation components where the operating temperature is below the ambient temperature. Water vapour diffusion is the molecular transportation of water vapour caused by partial pressure differences. Through water vapour diffusion in the direction of the partial pressure decline, considerable amounts of water vapour, dependent upon the relative humidity of the air, can proceed into the insulation and up to the object. In cold insulations, therefore, the ingress of water vapour must be decreased by applying a water vapour retarder on the warm side of the insulation materials. Water vapour retarders must consist of diffusion-tight materials, e. g. metal or compound foils.

This variant of moisture accumulation occurs especially with installations in intermittent operation, but also with installations in the open where the ambient temperature influences continuously change. After switching-off insulated industrial installations or installation components with a medium temperature above the ambient temperature, the mean temperature in the insulation material and in the air it contains decreases unavoidably. This causes subatmospheric pressure. The higher the operating temperature, the higher the negative pressure occurring after switch-off. This causes ambient air with the moisture it contains to flow into the insulation through longitudinal and circumferential seams as well as through penetrations. The amount of moisture invading the insulant is dependent upon the number and duration of switch-off periods, but also of the climate of the ambient air. Dependent upon the temperature and the relative humidity of the ambient air the moisture transport by air movement may be a multiple of the moisture transport caused by vapour diffusion. This process also transports chlorides from the ambient air into the insulation material, which leads to an increase of chloride content and thereby an increased risk of stress-corrosion cracking. The Table 1 shows examples for the amount of moisture transported. When heating the insulation through re-starting the installation, a positive pressure is caused which transports the air from the inside to the outside, whilst a proportion of the condensed moisture may remain in the insulant which leads to an accumulation of moisture there. Where the cladding is cooled to below condensation temperature, e. g. through cold rain or heat radiation towards the universe,

The overview shown below (Figure 2) indicates the critical places in the insulation of a container. In the subsequent figures, exemplary solutions are given how the ingress of surface water and the moisture accumulation in the insulant may be prevented. The following principles should always be heeded when planning an installation and executing the insulation system: Shingle-roof overlap of the individual cladding sheets. Collars in the sheets of tank or container roofs to facilitate a connection of removable boxes, insulation of exiting pipes or other penetrations (e. g. gallery supports) which are secure against the ingress of water. Where high water pressure or wind-driven water might occur, a sealing tape shall additionally be put into the overlap. Use of torispherical heads to allow for the rain-tight connection of e. g. exiting non-insulated pipes or round supports of walking galleries. Use of roof edge rings to allow for a faultless solution of the transition from roof sheets to the vertical sheets of the cladding. The use of sealing discs is only acceptable at vertical claddings penetration. Stiffening of the roof sheets of tanks, ducts and containers through stiffening folds into the insulation material or through standing seams with caps. Use of pre-insulated bonded pipe systems which consist of coiled seam pipes with inside seam as cladding and polyurethane (PUR)-rigid foam as insulation material. Application of flashings. At horizontal surfaces of installation components the cladding sheets should have a minimum slope of 3%. Insulated pipes should preferably be fastened with external supports. Formation of an air space between cladding and insulation material for installations in the open with intermittent operation and with installations in the open which are not continuously operated at temperatures above 120 C. The solutions subsequently shown give examples for containers, but of course also apply accordingly to other installation components. The responsibility for the planning and execution of torispherical heads, pipe supports and roof edge rings rests with the designer of the installation. In the light of the value of an industrial installation and its serviceability, the constructive and insulation technology effort to avoid moisture accumulation in the insulation material is required.
The flat-bottom tank serves as an example for the use of the shingle-roof principle. For other containers the same principle is applicable, however, must be modified where needed. The points shown here are the critical spots of a container insulation and shall be insulated following the principle of sheets overlapping shingle-roof fashion as shown in the following detail figures.

Lengthening for operating levers for stopcocks. It can be advisable to mount a lengthening bar between the blind flange and the stopcock, so that the cap need not be disassembled to e.g. flush the appliance. Position of the operating lever preferably below or on the side for protection against ingress of fluids. If positioned sideways, the stem shall be protected by a flashing.
