VOLLEYBALL STUDY GUIDE GENERAL INFORMATION: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The game starts with a serve.

The server calls out their score first then their opponents. Opponents must return the ball in three passes or less The serve may be played off the net. The team starting the play is called the attacking team. The team receiving the ball is called the defending team. The team consists of 6 players. You may serve the ball from any place behind the end line of the court.

The ball must be batted and not caught by the player. VOLLEYBALL TERMS:

1. BLOCKING- a play by one or more players who attempt to intercept the ball over or near the net. Blocking is permitted by any or all of the players in the front line. 2. UNDERHAND PASS OR BUMP- a ball played off the forearms in an underhand manner. It is the best way to pass a serve to the setter. 3. SET- a pass that is executed with two hands, over your head and places the ball in position for a player to spike. 4. SERVE-putting the ball into play. The server shall hit the ball with 1 hand, fist or arm while the ball is held, or after it is tossed or dropped by the server. The server must stand in the serving area and shall not touch the end line or floor outside the lines marking the width of the serving area. The serve is good if it stays within the court area, clears the entire net and if it is played/ touched by the opponents. 5. SPIKE- a ball forcibly hit into the opponents court with one hand overhead motion. Back court players cannot spike the ball. 6. DINK- a one hand hit in which the tips of the fingers are used to hit the ball to an area of the opponents court. 7. SIDE OUT- when the serving team fails to score a point the ball is given to their opponents. The exchange of the serve is called a side-out. 8. ROTATION- Act of shifting position in a clockwise direction. 9. ILLEGAL HIT- ball visibly comes to rest momentarily on any part of the body above and including the waist. 10. OBSTRUCTIONS- a ball striking the ceiling or an overhead obstruction above a playable area shall remain in play provided the ball contacts the ceiling or obstruction on the side of the net extended that is occupied by the team that last played the ball and the ball is legally played next by the same team.
