The Hunger Games Public Persona Project

PROJECT: The primary text for the unit 2 is The Hunger Games. The essential question for the unit is how does the media help create a public figures persona? The major themes that students will discuss are sensationalism and the public persona. While students read The Hunger Games, they will take note of the very specific private self and public persona of the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen. They will note how the media and sensationalism is very involved in the creation of her public persona. Students will then work in groups of 2-3 to create IMovie projects, similar to short trailers, about a public figure. In this project, they will discuss the figures very private self as well as their public persona. The private self and public persona will serve as a claim and counterclaim for students. IMovie A video editing software for Apple computers. Public Persona- The aspect of someones character that is presented to or perceived by others. Their public image. Sensationalism - The use of shocking details to cause a lot of excitement or interest.

They will use the research questions below to help guide their research gathering. RESEARCH QUESTIONS Who is your public figure? How did they grown up? What contributions did they make to society? How are they perceived by the public? Did they have a scandal or event that happened in their private life? PICTURES!

Date: ______________ Subject: ____________

A statement that is arguable, and has to supported with evidence. A good claim is specific. Example: Dont write a vague or general claim like (MTV sucks). Instead write a specific claim like (MTVs popularity is decreasing over time because it no longer plays music videos).

There is a difference between an opinion and an arguable claim.

OPINION: Twinkies are delicious. I like dance music. ARGUMENT/ARGUABLE CLAIM: Twinkies taste better than other snack cakes because of their texture, their creamy filling, and their golden appearance. Dance music has become popular for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the music; rather, the clear, fast beats respond to the need of people on amphetamines to move, and to move quickly. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES? An argument is supported by evidence, which can be debated/challenged. Opinion is supported by more opinion (and ultimately you end up with something along the lines of Well, just because, okay?). A claim can be backed up with research, evidence, testimony, and academic reasoning. A claim is something more than statement and support: an arguable claim also goes on to address the so what? question, the implications and why we should care in the first place. Remember that not all claims are created equal, and though a claim may be arguable, the best claims are focused, specific, complex, and relevant.

COUNTERCLAIMS A counterclaim goes against your claim, but it can still be valid if it is supported with evidence. In an argument, you never want to hear only one side, thats why its good to mention that there are two sides to everything.

EXAMPLE #1 CLAIM Sharks are very vicious creatures that kill thousands of innocent human beings every year. COUNTERCLAIM Even though the media portrays sharks as vicious creatures, humans are actually more dangerous to sharks than sharks are to humans.

EXAMPLE #2 CLAIM The incidents of bullying have gone down over time due to parent becoming more involved with what their children are doing at school. COUNTERCLAIM Although some parents believe that their child is not a victim of bullying, student surveys reveal a different story--specifically that many kids do not report incidents that have occurred in a school day.
