The plan of a restaurant is shown below. The scale used in this plan is 1:100. The square
grid paper used consists of 10 mm by 10 mm squares.

1. a) What are the actual lengths (in cm) of the following measurements on the plan?
i) 1 mm ii) 2 mm iii) 5 mm iv) 10 mm

b) What measurements (in mm) on the plan will the following actual lengths have?
i) 2 m ii) 1,8 m iii) 3,5 m

2. Estimate the following to the nearest ½ m without using a ruler:


a) the external width and length of the whole building
b) the internal width and length of the dining hall
c) the internal width and length of the kitchen
d) the internal width and length of the toilet area
3. On the plan, measure the following and give the actual dimensions in mm:
a) the width of the front door
b) the side length of the square table A
c) the diameter of the round table B
d) the length and width of the counter C
e) the length and width of table D
f) the length and width of the buffet E
g) the width of the external walls
h) the width of the internal walls

4. In the kitchen:
a) make an estimate of the open floor space (in m2) on which the personnel can walk or
stand
b) determine the actual length and width of the fridge F
c) if the height of the fridge is 2 m and 60% of its volume is available for cooling
beverages, calculate this volume in litres
d) determine the actual length and width of the cupboard G and calculate its volume (in
m3) if its height is 2,2 m
e) determine the actual length and width of the working area WW’ that includes the
washing up basins
f) determine the length and width of the table T and calculate its area in m2

5. By studying the front and side views of the restaurant (scale 1 : 100), determine the
following:
a) the actual height of the walls and the width and height of the two front windows
b) the actual radius of the semicircular window above the front door
c) the height of the small kitchen window above floor level
d) the length of the roof (front view) and its slant height
e) the vertical height of the top of the roof above floor level

Note: the drawings above are meant to be drawn on paper where dots are 1 cm apart.
They have been reduced to fit into the available space.
