WELCOME NOTE
Welcome to Manila and to the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014! In partnership with the Philippine government (specially the Dept of Tourism, Dept of Energy and the City of Manila), we are delighted to be hosting the fifth leg of Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014 from February 6-9 and welcome all the student teams from various countries in Asia and the Middle East. This is a great privilege and we are honoured to host the competition this year which coincides with the celebration of Shells 100 years in the Philippines. There will be a number of firsts for this event. For the first time since its introduction in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the SEM Asia competition will take place at the very heart of a bustling city, the City of Manila, which will give it a different flavour, more spectators and more excitement. In addition, the Shell Energy Lab and the Shell Powering Progress Together (PPT) Forum will be held for the first time in Asia. The Shell Energy Lab offers an exciting journey into the future of energy while the Powering Progress Together Forum will gather some 350 thought leaders from the public, private, and civil society sectors in a one-day event to tackle and explore strong partnerships and address the challenges on what is known as the Stress Nexus which relates to the interrelationships of the vital resource systems of energy, water, and food. The Shell Eco-marathon is more than just a global mileage competition as it is Shells biggest educational platform, to generate awareness and push the boundaries of energy efficiency and sustainable mobility among young and talented students who will be the future scientists, engineers and technology innovators. Heres to the success of the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Asia, Shell Energy Lab, and Powering Progress Together Forum in our centennial year and we hope that you find these events exciting, inspiring and truly enjoyable! We want you to experience Philippine hospitality and realise that its more fun in the Philippines! Congratulations to all of you and Mabuhay! Edgar O. ABOUT SHELL ECO-MARATHON

YOU ARE DRIVING INNOVATION Shell Eco-marathon challenges teams of science, engineering and technology students around the world to design, build and drive the most fuel-efficient vehicles possible. Culminating in three locations in the Americas, Europe and Asia, Shell Eco-marathon is also a global forum for debate about smarter mobility and the future of energy, involving academics, politicians, businesses, students and you. Shell Eco-marathon provides a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of design and fuel efficient driving, and to build the cars of tomorrow. This is an important part of Shells response to the energy challenge to meet the worlds growing consumption of energy in a responsible and sustainable way. A BIT OF HISTORY Shell Eco-marathon can trace its roots back to 1939 and a friendly bet between scientists at a Shell research facility in Illinois, USA, as to who could drive their own car the furthest on a gallon of fuel. The winner managed a little over 21km. In 1985, Shell harnessed that spirit of friendly competition and established Shell Eco-marathon as a way to inspire students to explore fuel efficiency and to foster debate and partnership around smarter mobility. SHELL ECO-MARATHON FACTS & HISTORY Success is measured on who can drive farthest on 1 kWh or 1 litre of fuel and become the most fuel efficient team by thinking creatively about energy efficiency and putting new ideas into practice. 126 student teams from 16 countries across Asia registered in two different design classes Prototype (aimed to build the most aerodynamic and fuel-efficient vehicle possible) and UrbanConcept (aimed to build fuel-economy vehicles that resemble todays cars). From vehicle design to financing, student teams manage their projects from start to finish. The winning teams in both the Prototype and UrbanConcept classes receive a grand prize of $2,000 USD for their school. In 2010 at the first Shell Eco-marathon Asia, 81 teams participated in the challenge and this year, we expect 126 teams to participate. Thats an increase of more than 45 teams since Shell Eco-marathon began in Asia! With more than two successful decades in Europe, this mileage challenge debuted in Asia in 2010. After three years in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Asia event moved to Manila, Philippines, for the first-ever Shell Eco-marathon to take place on real city streets in 2014. Previous Shell Eco-marathon Asia winners for the Prototype Combustion Grand Prize include: 2012: Luk Jao Mae Khlong Prapa of Dhurakij Pubdit University, Thailand (2903.0 km/l) 2011: Luk Jao Mae Khlong Prapa, of Dhurakij Pubdit University, Thailand (2,213.4km/L) 2010: Kong Thabbok Upatham Changkol Kho of So Tho Bo School, Thailand (1521.9km/L)

GENERAL DOs AND DONTs DOs Greet with a smile or a handshake whenever you meet someone you know on the road. When visiting anyones house to attend a social function, greet the eldest in the family first and take a small gift as a mark of gratitude. Leave your shoes outside whenever you enter anyones house. Always ask by which name the person concerned would like to be addressed. Some might want a formal approach, while some may be preferred to be called by their double names as having multiple names is common in the Philippines. Do develop personal relations outside the office. Indulge in casual conversations and get to know each other in the personal level as it is an important part of the business culture. Do dress in perfect formal attire when attending a business meeting. Be confident and respectful towards your seniors. Do make the business appointments weeks before the actual meeting. Before arrival make it a point to confirm the appointment. DONTs Dont rule out the importance of or say anything offensive about anyones family. Filipinos give immense importance to their family values and are extremely sentimental about it. This should also be kept in mind when dealing with your business associates. Dont point out your finger while calling out to anyone. It is considered offensive. Direct eye contact should be avoided as staring for a long time is a mark of indecency and rudeness. Dont display sexual affections in public, especially in churches.
