Student A

Assessments Student A was given a Whats Your Learning Style by Marcia L. Conner assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to get a better understanding of how this student learns and process information. Knowing her learning style will help give the teacher insight on how to approach this students learning. The three learning styles this assessment analyzes are: visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic. Student A scored the highest within the auditory category, followed by visual. I learned through this assessment that this student learns best by talking to herself or thinking out loud to herself, or to others to process what she is learning. Through other observations over this course, I have been able to witness her strengths and weaknesses. She is very strong in verbal communications and does not have a problem expressing how she feels, how she thinks, or if she needs additional instructions. The issue that arises from her strengths a is her inability to be patient and raise her hand to speak. This causes disruptions during instructional time, or when another student is talking. However, through the learning styles assessment it is evident that her learning style is auditory. The second assessment given was the Student Interest Survey. This was conducted through an interview process, however, I allowed her to write in her answers. The purpose of the interview process was for me to be able to hear her thoughts as she wrote down her answers, and have the opportunity to get to know her on a more personal level. The interest survey had seventeen questions. The first question asked the student, Three things I do best in school are? Her response was, math, reading and unit tests. Her goal is to get 100% on all her unit tests. She wants to be able to answer all the questions without getting any of them wrong. I agreed with her, and expressed that I too wanted to be able to

do the same thing within my classes as well. The next question asked, Some of the things that I would like to work on this year are? Student As response was, Not having a meltdown. When I asked her about this response, she said, I just get frustrated, and want to throw things. I just want to focus. Sometimes it is hard to focus when others are being noisy. Question eleven was interesting, it asked, If I could choose between watching television, playing video games or using the computer, I would chose_____, because______. She said, None, because I dont get enough time to play outside. I was very surprised by her response, because a most children would choose at least one of the choices. I learned through this assessment that Student A enjoys to read, and play outside with her friends. She is outgoing, honest, and loves to learn. The third assessment was a collection of work samples through out the past few weeks. The first work sample was an assessment I had given from my lesson on germs. The students were required to write three to four sentences using the new vocabulary words bacteria, germs, and viruses to describe what they learned, using complete sentences. This student used the three vocabulary words, and four complete sentences. She was able to meet the requirements of the assessment successfully. Then she went above the minimum requirement and drew a picture of a germ. I was able to see evidence of her learning and understanding. The second work sample was from a comprehension lesson given on the book Dear Juno. The class was asked a series of questions that related to the story, the first two were modeled, then the second question was given some scaffolding and group participation, the last question was independent answers. Overall, the student had a clear understanding of the text that was read, and her answers reflect her understanding.

The third work sample was periodic math assessment. Student A scored 53 points out of 57 points possible. She has a very clear understanding of the math concepts within the periodic assessment. What I learned from this assessment is that she understands what she is learning in math, and that she may need to be challenged slightly to give her that push she needs to keep her engaged. Overall, all three assessments gave me the understanding that she understands what she is learning and does very well in most subjects areas. Reflection Student A Through the assessments administered to Student A, I have been able to get a better understanding of this students personality, learning styles and abilities. Through the learning styles assessment I was able to conclude that this student needs more opportunities to share her thinking processes. She also needs to have explicit instructions and the chance to verbalize and internalize those instructions to gain a better understanding of what she is expected to do. There have been several occasions where I have witnessed her frustration about an assignment or lesson because she felt like the instructions did not make sense. For this student, I would make accommodations by giving the class a set of explicit instructions. Then, I will ask them to share with their group what they are expected to do before they begin. This will give them the ability to see the directions, and verbalize and internalize. I think this would not only help this student, but others in the class as well. Furthermore, the assessments also gave me more of evidence that this student understands the concepts she is being taught. She is very capable of being challenged or pushed a little bit more, to give her the extra motivation she needs. She is excited when the

class is going to take a test. She enjoys taking the assessment, and she enjoys seeing the results. If she is not happy with results, it motivates her to do better the next time. I can accommodate her educational needs by meeting with her one on one to create goals to work towards. I would create graphs for her to be able to see her progress over the school year. I will give her different types of assignments that involve writing and research to help her feel like she has a purpose for all those thoughts she has running through her mind. I will encourage her creativity and motivation to learn. In closing, I feel very honored to have been able to work with such an amazing child. She has had some struggles over the past few weeks, but overall this student helps me to feel excited about teaching. I know that if she is given the right tools, and motivation she can do anything and succeed. She is bright, loving, and a joy to be around.

Student B

Student B was given a Whats Your Learning Style by Marcia L. Conner assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to get a better understanding of how this student learns and process information. Knowing his learning style will help give the teacher insight on how to approach this students learning. The three learning styles this assessment analyzes are: visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic. This student scored extremely high in the tactile/kinesthetic category. The other two sections he scored very low. Over the past several weeks and by administering the learning style assessment I have been able to observe and understand this students strengths and weaknesses. He is a child who needs to given the opportunity to move around and work with his hands. This student works best by discovery and building or manipulating things. The second assessment given was a Student Interest Survey. The purpose of this survey was to give me better insight of this person, and what he enjoys to do in his free time. This will help me to be able to connect to his background knowledge or tools for motivation within my lesson plans to strike at his interests. The first question asks, The three things that I do best in school are? His response to this question was, Art, recess, and doing my classroom job, or chocking people, and karate. I found that part about chocking people a little shocking. And tried to address my concern with the harming other people. He seemed to understand, however, I did relay the information to our mentor teacher. The next question asked, Some of the things that I would like to work on this year are? Student B responds was, Not getting 57 on my math test, listening and doing my work, and not being mean to other people. The last question that intrigued me was, I would like to learn more about? His answer was, Science, I would like to learn about bees, ants, poisonous spiders, and chimpanzees. I feel this information directly connects with

his learning style assessment as well. He needs to able to experiment and investigate information in order to keep him on task and interested in what he is learning. The third assessment was a collection of work samples through out the past few weeks. The first work sample I have is a quiz on possessive nouns. The lesson included a fun video, and then some time for peer interaction and participation, followed by this short quiz. This Student B was able successfully understand each question on the quiz. Therefore, the student was able to grasp the grammar concepts of possessive nouns very well. However, as we look further into his work samples, it is evident that he struggles in other areas. His second work samples are Mountain Math, and a Periodic Assessment. Both of which are math concepts. The Mountain Math is typically a whole group discussion that entire class does together. This student usually struggles to stay connected with the rest of the class and gets distracted very easily. The Period Assessment also shows evidence that the math concepts are not connecting in all areas, but he manages to get through just enough to pass. His score on the assessment was 40 out of 57, giving him a 70%. This is passing, however, is it acceptable? Finally, the last work samples are written comprehension assessments. One of them was taken from a lesson I had delivered on germs. Student B completed the assignment, however, he did not follow the directions given. He was required to write complete sentences and use the three new vocabulary words they learned within the lesson. He was able to use two of the vocabulary words, but he was not able to write complete sentences. The second assessment was a graphic organizer foldable on another lesson given on the story Dear Juno. He was able to complete four out of the five sections on the graphic

organizer. However, I think he may have been unclear on one of the questions. That could be due to my lesson delivery. Overall, he did well on the assessment and seemed to comprehend the story that was read. What I have noticed throughout his work samples is his handwriting. One of the characteristics of a tactile/kinesthetic learner is poor handwriting. Reflection Student B Through the assessments administered to Student B, I have been able to get a better understanding of this students personality, learning styles and abilities. Through the learning styles assessment I was able to conclude that this student needs more hands on learning, and frequent opportunities to get up and move around. They would also benefit in using large motor skills within their learning to help them stay engaged. I feel this student would benefit by integrating science with math or language arts. Giving this student more of an opportunity to explore and experiment with this learning to keep him motivated to learn. Furthermore, I believe this student would benefit from his learning if he was given more one on one attention. I feel it is important for students to know why they are learning, and how much they are learning. For me to accommodate his needs I would create a graph showing him how well he has done in major areas of study. Then we would discuss what he would like to do to improve, or learn more about. Then from there we can keep setting goals and meeting objectives together. This will give him a purpose for staying on task. In return, I will provide opportunities for him to be able to move around and work more often with manipulatives.

In conclusion I feel Student B is an amazing child, one that needs to be nurtured and cared for. He is one of those students who could easily be categorized as a problem child if his needs are not met. I know this student has potentially to be a very great student if someone would just believe in him, and work off of his strengths instead of his weaknesses. He is a loving and caring child, which I have grown very fond of.
