Dysplasia dys= abnormal; plas= to grow Alteration in the size, shape, and organization of the cells due to chronic

ic irritation or inflammation; may progress to neoplasia (tumor formation, usually malignant) or revert to normal if the stress is removed.

Some Types of Dysplasia Mucosal Dysplasia Chronic irritation due to smoking or alcohol drinking. Can cause swelling, redness or discoloration, formation of additional tissue on top and usually leads to oral cancer.

Fibromuscular Dysplasia Abnormal cell development that narrows the width of one or more arteries.

Cervical Dysplasia Often called zero- grade cancer of the uterine cervix, which consists of abnormally structured cells that mat eventually become cancerous and invade the uterus.
