Syllabus: 5th Grade Independent Math

Course Information: Title: Independent Math Grade: 5th Grade Subject: Math Instructor: Brenda Williams Class Face Time: M-F 9:10-10:10 Resources: TenMarks Curriculum (TenMarks.com) Expected Student Audience: Students are enrolled in the Indianapolis Public Schools district located in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Prior to their entry into 5th grade, the students have completed the 4th grade math curriculum and participated in the statewide 4th grade ISTEP+ accountability assessment. 80% of the students within the district receive free lunch. Therefore, there will be communication with students and parents to ensure completion assignments. Teacher Communication: We will meet daily face to face. During this time, students may ask questions or receive intervention. Intervention will be determined by posttest results. In addition, students or parents can email me at williabx@myips.org. I will respond to emails within 1 day Monday through Friday. In addition, I can be reached at 317-226-4259. If a message is required, I will call back by the next morning.

Course Description: This course is designed to develop math practices: make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. The course content was developed based on the Common Core Standards required for 5th grade. The Common Core Standards are broken into five sections: Number and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations - Fractions, Measurement & Data, Geometry, and Operations & Algebraic Thinking. If a student completes the 5th grade curriculum, the students will advance to the 6th grade curriculum. Students will be working independently learning the math common core standards using the TenMarks curriculum. Students will begin with a pretest. If a score of 90% or better is earned, students will continue to the next standard. If a score of less than 90% is earned, students will be given assignments. Each assignment includes videos and hints as they practice 10 problems. If students receive assignment scores below 85%, TenMarks will assign student a do over. The do over consists of an Amplifier (PowerPoint instruction) along with 10 additional practice problems with videos and hints. Upon completing the assignments, students will complete a posttest. Students receiving a score below 85% will be given an opportunity to improve their score on their own by reviewing the lessons and retaking the tests. Students below 75% will participate in an intervention group led by the teacher.

Learning Outcomes: (Note: State of Indiana only requires student to receive a Pass score on ISTEP. However, a Pass+ score on ISTEP represents the highest performance level. The cut scores for Pass+ are 556-775.) The learner will be able to: Number and Operations in Base Ten Understand the place value system with Pass+ score on ISTEP Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths with Pass+ score on ISTEP Number and Operations Fractions Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions with Pass+ score on ISTEP Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions with Pass+ score on ISTEP Measurement and Data Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system with Pass+ score on ISTEP Represent and interpret data with Pass+ score on ISTEP Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition with Pass+ score on ISTEP Graph points to the coordinate plane to solve real world and mathematical problems with Pass+ score on ISTEP. Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties with Pass+ score on ISTEP. Operations and Algebraic Thinking Write and interpret numerical expressions with Pass+ score on ISTEP. Analyze patterns and relationships with Pass+ score on ISTEP. Topics by Week: Weeks 1 &2: Number and Operations in Base Ten: Multi-digit Numbers and Patterns in Numbers (5NBT1 & 2) Weeks 3-6: Number and Operations in Base Ten: Decimals and Whole Numbers (5NBT3-7) Weeks 7-10: Number and Operations Fractions: Add and Subtract Fractions (5NF1-2) Weeks 11-16: Number and Operations Fractions: Multiply and Divide Fractions (5NF3-7) Weeks 17-20: Measurement and Data: Measurement Systems and Volume (5MD1-5) Weeks 21-22: Geometry: Lines and Two Dimensional Figures (5G2-4) Weeks 23-24: Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Numerical Expressions and Patterns (5OA1-3) Expectations of Student Participation: Students are expected to complete at least one TenMark lesson per day. In order to complete the state standards prior to the 5th Grade ISTEP test, the above weekly topics are required pacing for the class. At the end of each weekly section above, grades will be posted. For example, at the end weeks 1 and 2, students must have at least 5NBT1 and 2 completed to receive a grade. If a zero is recorded, students will receive additional support.

Student Communication Expectations: Students are expected to view the video and hints prior to asking the teacher for help. (Note: TenMarks is an independent online math curriculum. Students do not communicate with each other online. ) Late Work Policy: Students have one week to complete any assignment that was not completed by the due date, and the grade will be reduced 25%. (Students who do not have Internet access at home will be an exception and we will work together to find a solution to getting assignment completed.) Grading Policy: All assignments have equal weighting and are worth 10 points and tests are worth 100 points. Grades are posted every weekend. The grading scale for Indianapolis Public Schools: 100-95 A, 94-92 A-, 91-89 B+ 88-84 B 83-82 B81-79 C+ 78-75 C 74-73 C72-71 D+ 70-67 D 66-65 D64-0 F Assessments: Students will be given a pretest prior to beginning each standard. Prior to taking the Posttest for each standard, all lessons for the standard must be completed. If a student shows mastery on the pretest, the student will advance to the next standard. Lesson and assessments are automatically graded in the TenMarks online environment. Academic Honesty: Since we meet each day in the classroom, students are expected to complete all tests independently and in the classroom. However, lessons maybe completed at home. Failure to complete the assessment in the classroom, future tests will not be available to the student until teacher makes it available manually rather than automatically. Acceptable Use Policy: The Indianapolis Public Schools network is intended for educational purposes. The Acceptable Use Policy can be found at http://www.boarddocs.com/in/indps/Board.nsf/Public (Click Policies Tab, in the search box type: 8321, and click on 8321) Violations of this policy may subject the User to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion for students and discharge for employees.
