The Trial Assessment


What to look for.... It is always a contention as to what to look for in an player. FHM trained observer will be looking for the traits in a player which may lead to excellence at a later stage. Some of the key questions will include:

Speed

- Are they quick? - Are they balanced and agile?

Personality - Do they try or give up easily? - Do they want to be involved even when they make mistakes? - Do they always try to do something positive? - Do they encourage others or lead by example? - Do they help team mates or only play for themselves Insight - Do they recognise opportunities within the game? - Space to play or move into? - Where there team mates are in relation to them the ball and the opponent? - When to ball will be played? - Cues from other players such as posture, eye contact, awareness or lack of awareness in an opponent? - Do they seem to be in right place at the right time? - Do they have good technique? - Are they comfortable moving off both feet, turn both directions? - Can they control the ball with ease using hands and feet? - Can they run, dribble and beat opponents - Can they pass using various styles and ranges - Can they tackle and intercept

Organisation 30 yrds x 30 yrds, 8 players, each with a ball. Cones are arranged inside the grid a yard apart. Each player must scan forward, sideways and behind for space and run and visit the three channels as many times as possible and change direct to exploit the space forward Progression Combine surfaces, alternate feet , change pace, and direction on gears 1-5 Each player must scan the grid and move into the gap

When you want to pick up speed, do not kick the ball farther away. Instead, move your feet quicker thus pushing the ball more frequently.
When dribbling into space, don't just fix your eyes on the ball. Learn to simultaneously dribble and scan the field around you.

Organisation
20 yrds x 20 yrds, with cones around the outside. 8 players inside the grid, with a ball at their feet.. All players dribble ball around the area using various surfaces. Left and right feet. On call throw ball in the air and control with head, knee or chest Progression On call, players sprint around the nearest outside cone and return to ball and continue to dribble. multiple touches.

Organisation: Combination Surfaces 20 yrds x 20 yrds, 8 players, 4 red, 4 blue. 4 balls Gates are arranged inside the grid a yard apart. Red players must scan forward, sideways and behind for space and dribble pass the defenders (blue ) through an unoccupied gate. If blue tackle, red become the defender Progression 3 v 5 If you don't keep the ball close to your body, you will lose it. Be patient when confronted by a defender. If he is jockeying you, use feints and tricks to get him off balance. Never put your head down and pray that the move will work. Instead, react to the defender by looking at his stance and trying to find weakness in his footing.
