I)The poet ,Owen, used the simile What passing bells for these who die as cattle to describe

e men as they are not mature yet. Men are like the cattle which has not matured physically and mentally for the slaughter house.

Men, like cattle , was unprepared to fight and resist meaning that the battle was abrupt and they did not have time to train themselves for the battlefield ahead of them. Many are shocked when they are alerted that they are going to war just like a cattle knowing that it is going to die. They are defenseless and untrained to survive the slaughter just like cattle and were dragged by force despite their reluctance.

It

would be a loss to throw a cattle to a slaughterhouse when it can grow up to be a cow and provide more supplies such as diary goods and more work force as it can be used to plough the field or pull a carriage. The same goes with men as their potential to be beneficial to their society and their unfulfilled future was destroyed by something unnecessary as war.

ii) The poet used the images related to death to make the readers understand more about the war and the how sorrowful it was . He makes the readers feel in his point of view about the war. The poet used personification monstrous anger of the gun to show how the soldiers anger on the war was condensed into the gun and releases his anger towards his enemy as they took away their peace, forcing them to come onto the battlefield to deal with them.

The poet uses onomatopoeia to describe the sounds in the battle stuttering rattle to show how fast the guns are shooting. He also used alliteration to show emphasis on the gun shooting rifles rapid rattle. The candle symbolizes the life as it burns out gradually but the war makes it burn at the furious rate.
