How do energy consumption meters work

Where the electricity comes from that powers your home.

The utility company often connects their power lines to the weatherhead on the electrical power pole. It is connected to a pipe that connects to your electric meter. The device that will measure the power your electrical system of your uses throughout the month. The electric meter not only measures power, but is one way the utility company can disconnect power from your home.

An electric power company uses electric meters to measure the amount of electricity consumed by each of its customers. The power company installs an electric meter near where its power lines enter a customer's building. It reads the meter periodically and charges the customer for the amount of electricity used.

Electricity meter

An electricity meter or energy meter is a device that measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a residence, business, or an electrically powered device. Electricity meters are typically calibrated in billing units, the most common one being the kilowatt hour [kWh].

Types of electricity meter

Electromechanical meters

The electromechanical induction meter operates by counting the revolutions of a non-magnetic, but electrically conductive, metal disc which is made to rotate at a speed proportional to the power passing through the meter. The number of revolutions is thus proportional to the energy usage.
The disc is acted upon by two coils. One coil is connected in such a way that it produces a magnetic flux in proportion to the voltage and the other produces a magnetic flux in proportion to the current.

A permanent magnet exerts an opposing force proportional to the speed of rotation of the disc. The equilibrium between these two opposing forces results in the disc rotating at a speed proportional to the power or rate of energy usage.

Electronic meters

Electronic meters display the energy used on an LCD or LED display, and some can also transmit readings to remote places. In addition to measuring energy used, electronic meters can also record other parameters of the load and supply such as instantaneous and maximum rate of usage demands, voltages, power factor and reactive power used etc. They can also support time-of-day billing, for example, recording the amount of energy used during on-peak and off-peak hours.
