ROLL A ROBOT Grade Level: Kindergarten Date: 02/04/2014 Subject: Math Time Required: 45 minutes Unit: Shapes Title:

Roll a Robot Big Idea/Essential questions: The purpose of this lesson plan is to introduce different shapes through a fun learning environment. Also students will enhance their fine motor skills by colouring in the different shapes. Furthermore, students will start recognizing at a glance familiar arrangements on a die. Alberta Program of Studies Outcomes/Objectives/Expectations/Achievement Indicators: Say the number sequence 1 to 6 by 1s, starting anywhere from 1 to 6. Recite number names from a given number to a stated number Recognize at a glance and name familiar arrangements of 1 to 6 objects or dots. Match numerals with their given pictorial representations (shape). Use direct comparison to compare two objects based on a single attribute using words bigger, smaller, or almost the same (circle). Describe 3-D objects (dice). Explore self-expression through creative thought and art (colouring in the robot). Enhance fine motor skills through colouring and working with dice. Students will have an understanding before this activity: Starting concept of counting. Students will be able to demonstrate how to colour. Students will have a basic understanding of shapes. Students will be able to follow instructions.

Resources: Roll a Robot worksheets The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPuI4XyyZUE Cross-curricular connections: This activity allows for students to work with their creativity and fine motor skills. Students will demonstrate capability to follow instructions. Students will demonstrate curiosity, and interest and willingness to learn. Pre-assessment/Pre-Activities: Prior to this activity, I have already introduced the concept of shapes and have given the students plenty of opportunities to act out stories using shapes. Also, I have introduced the children to the story The Greedy Triangle. Materials: Dice Colour utensils Roll a Robot activity sheets/per child

Procedure: 1. I will display the second level worksheet on the SmartBoard, allowing me to give verbal instructions to the students on how to play Roll a Robot. 2. Students will review our objective and discuss the different shapes. 3. I will hand out the second level of worksheet to the students. 4. Students play with Roll a Robot activity with their partners or individually. 5. Students are given 30 minutes to complete the activity. 6. Students will describe the shapes while completing the activity. 7. If a student completes the activity in less than 30 minutes I will provide them with the next level of worksheet. 8. If certain students display a great deal of knowledge towards shapes, I will provide those students with the third and/or fourth worksheet so they can work on reading the colours and numbers. 9. Once all the worksheets are completed the students can start creating their own robots, with different shapes, on the SmartBoard. 10. I will walk around the classroom talking to the students and asking them about the different shapes that they are working with. 11. Students self-access how they did on their paper.

Assessment: I will assess the students by observing them during this activity. During this time I will walk around the classroom and talk to the students and ask them questions about the shapes they are working with. Retaining the worksheets that the students have completed will provide a more concrete assessment.

Differentiation: This activity will be able to accommodate students with ELL and gifted children. This activity provides four different worksheets that will scaffold each child to a harder level. Children with ELL will be able to work on the first two worksheets. Once completed these worksheet, students will be able to work towards reading colours and numbers on worksheet three and four. Students who already know the shapes will be able to work with a SmartBoard allowing them to create their own robot with different shapes, which they will be able to learn and expand their mathematical knowledge.
