Charles law

V T (absolute)
Charles Extrapolation

By graphing the volume of the gas against temperature, 0C had no significance, but all measured gases seem to converge to a common zero point: absolute zero We must always use absolute temperatures (Kelvin scale) with the gas laws!

Avogadros Law (n and V)

In the previous laws, the amount of gas was always constant. However, the amount of a gas (n) is directly proportional to the volume of the gas, meaning that as the amount of gas increases, so does the volume. Mathematically, we write:
nV

For a before and after situation: V1 V2 = n1 n2

Molar Volume and STP

Standard temperature and pressure (STP) are defined as 0C and 1 atm. At standard temperature and pressure, one mole of any gas occupies 22.4 L. The volume occupied by one mole of gas (22.4 L) is called the molar volume.

1 mole Gas = 22.4 L

Illustrating Daltons Law

Consider the two flasks, one containing nitrogen, the other containing half as many molecules of oxygen Since the flasks are the same size and the temperature is the same, the pressure in the oxygen flask is half that of the nitrogen

p=p +p
N2

O2

If we combine the oxygen with the nitrogen (making a sort of synthetic air), we find that the pressure obtained is the sum of the individual pressures

7. Oxygen gas is normally sold in 49.0 L steel containers at a pressure of 150.0 atm. What volume would the gas occupy if the pressure was reduced to 1.02 atm and the temperature raised from 20oC to 35 oC? 8. A sample of gas contains 12.45 g of H2, 60.67 g of N2, and 2.38 g of NH3. If the total pressure of the gas is 1.50 atm, what are the partial 9. pressures of the gases? Calculate the density of gas mixture ! Silane, SiH4, reacts with O2 to give silicon dioxide and water SiH4(g) + 2 O2(g) SiO2(s) + 2 H2O(g)

If SiH4 is mixed with O2 in the correct stoichiometric ratio, and if the total pressure of the mixture is 120 mm Hg, what are the partial pressures of SiH4 and O2? When the reactants have been completely consumed, what is the total pressure in the flask

10. A sample of helium gas at 33C, and you want to increase the average speed of helium atoms by 10.0%. To what temperature should the gas be heated to accomplish this?
