Lesson Plan 1 Subject: Virginia and U.S. Government Topic: Origins and Foundations of American Government Objectives: GOVT.

2 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the political philosophies that shaped the development of Virginia and United States constitutional government by b) explaining the influence of the Magna Carta, the English Petition of Rights, and the English Bill of Rights Target Audience: 11-12 Grade students Equipment needed computers with Internet access; copies of Group Assignment Outlines Software Used: Wikispaces.com or LiveBinders.com Instructional Activities: 1. Have the students respond to the journal prompt: Why do we study the historical and philosophical influences that shaped our government? How do these influences manifest themselves in our daily lives? 2. Ask the students share the answers and discuss their responses. Focus on soliciting examples from current new events. 3. Divide the students in three groups. Assign an outline that serves as a review guide for each specific influence to each group. The students have been studying this information in the previous classes. Group 1: Magna Carta 1. 2. Limited governmental power Fundamental rights a. b. Trial by jury Due process of law

4. Assign a number of students in each group to work on researching the websites that provide definitions for each of the subcategories of influences. 5. Assign a number of students in each group to work on researching a current event that illustrates each subcategory of influence. 6. Assign a number of students in each group to work on writing a brief explanation of how each current event connects to the subcategory of influence. 7. Ask each group to post their findings on their page on the class wiki or on their section of LiveBinder for the class. Each group will briefly explain their connections to the class. Assessment Strategy: Evaluating the groups webpage on accuracy, relevance, and logical connections made on each groups page as well as their ability to explain their examples during the class presentation. Each student is also evaluated on his or her contribution to the groups page.
