Goals/Objectives SWBAT Conduct surveys around the room in order to gather data in regards to everyones cultures Compile data into a chart in order to demonstrate understanding of how many people in a room fit their cultural question Standards PACCSS Math o CC.2.4.1.A.4: Represent and interpret data using tables and charts Materials and Preparation Cultural interviews (1 per student) Paper Pencil Half size chart paper Markers Classroom Arrangement and Management Issues Classroom Arrangement o Students will be gathering at the carpet for instructions before moving off to their desks and around the room to survey each other Possible Management Issues o Disruption Instead of demanding for silence, I will generate interest in the students about the assignment: I cant wait to see what you guys come up with! o Students who continuously disrupt the class by talking or making distracting noises will be given 3 warnings. If it persists, they will be asked to move their clip. o Students may come up to me and ask me the same question 2-3 times because I have not explained it well enough I will either stop the class to make an announcement If it is long and I need to have them sit down and talk about examples of what theyre doing, we will gather on the carpet to do so Plan Introduction [15 minutes] Students will be introduced to the lesson by figuring out How are we similar? How are we different?; short discussion to follow on what some students think we are similar/different Activity will be introduced o Directions on how to survey o Direction on how to make a chart

Partners will be assigned Survey questions will be assigned based on voting Survey questions o What do you eat your food with? (Fork, spoon, knife, chopstick, etc.) o What country is your family from? o What is your favorite holiday to celebrate? o Do you listen to music or play an instrument? o Do you know how to speak another language? o If you speak another language, can you read it?/Can you write it? o Do you have a special toy or family treasure that describes your culture? o What is your favorite tale? o Have you ever visited the country your family is from? o How long do you think students in (choose country/continent) go to school for? (hours/day) o How do you think people around the world know the story Cinderella? o Do you speak another language at home with your parents or family?

Students format their questions with one another [5 minutes] Based on examples hung up on the wall, partners will be able to choose how they would like to format their questions based on how well they think they can get an answer Students will get the chance to choose who will ask the questions and who will record the answers Each student will carry around their surveys with them to answer survey questions if needed Surveying around the room [15 minutes] Students will work their way around the room to survey each other Compiling data onto chart [20 minutes] Students will be compiling their information onto a chart through representations of a T-chart or a bar graph T-chart example, if the question was Do you know how to speak another language? They will make a T-chart of yes/no and represent with either symbols or students names to show how many people in the room speak another language On the bottom of their chart, partners will answer the following questions: o What did you learn about the data you found? (3 things) o Most people said _______________ o How do you think this compares to the outside world? Closing [5 minutes] We will all gather on the carpet to talk about the activity we just did Closing discussion on how similar/different we are and in what aspects are we just that

Anticipating Students Responses and Your Possible Responses Students may come up to me and ask me the same question 2-3 times because I have not explained it well enough o I will either stop the class to make an announcement o If it is long and I need to have them sit down and talk about examples of what theyre doing, we will gather on the carpet to do so Students may be unsure which data representation to pick (t-chart or bar graph) o Will go over when giving out directions o May stop the class to gather them together to talk about different techniques different groups used Assessment of the Goals/Objects Listed Above o Observations o T-charts/bar graphs Accommodations ELL Students o Will be paired with students who will help them understand the task at hand o I will be double checking partners who include these students to make sure they are on task
