Notes
One of the basic components of amy pneumatic circuit is the the pneumatic valve. Valves are like electrical switches in that they are designed to turn something on. Valves can be used to switch on and off the main air supply.

The 5/2 valve has ve ports (holes) and is capable of changing between two states.

Unlike the 3/2 valve both states of the 5/2 valve can be considered active. When in the position shown the air supply is directed from port 1 to 4. Exhaust air is directed through port 2 to port 3.

When the spool is in its other position the compressed air supply is directed through port 1 to port 2. Exhaust air is directed though port 4 to port 5.

The symbol for the ve port valve depicts both its states.
In state b the upper half of the symbol applies. In the state a the lower half of the symbol applies.
