Tier II

I understand that to improve the academic success of my students, I must also improve their social success. Definition: A Tier II classroom management plan recognizes that not every student will respond to a tier I behavior management plan. It works to modify current negative behaviors so that students can learn to make positive behavioral choices. Philosophy: I want my classroom to be caring and safe where students are nurtured in a fair environment. This requires each student regardless of learning style to be provided with the resources they need to be successful. This will require me to make accommodations for all students.

Proactive Intervention Strategies:

Instruction: Students offered extended time on tasks and assigned work Modifications to questions and format of test and homework Placed in groups with a peer that will model good behavior Tutoring after school and lunch tutoring program Additional time for reading assignments Emphasis on successes Seating to reduce distractions Frequent breaks Forming effective teams is an important first step in cooperative learning. These pods will assist those students who struggle academically by pairing them with students who do well academically. Each team will have one high student, two average students and one low-ability student Environmental Accommodations

My classroom will be organized with everything having a place so that students who struggle to focus and are easily distracted. I will have a semi-circle help table in the back of the room for struggling students. I will also use the semi-circle table for my after school tutoring. This will provide extra help for those students who may need it. I will also create a "Safe Place" area called the "Birds Nest." When a student needs to have a safe place to think alone or to practice techniques to calm down, they will be able to excuse themselves and spend some time in the birds nest. Procedures:

Quiet Signal: When you hear the wind chimes, freeze, put everything down, and quietly listen. I will use the rules review to reinforce this concept. I will approach the student and (a) have him or her read off the posted class rules, (b) ask the student which of those rules his or her current behavior is violating, and (c) have the student state what positive behavior he or she will engage in instead. Hallway: I will create a visual reminder, a sign with this on it so that students see it right before they leave the classroom. Show me HALL Hands at side-hands off the wall and off others All eyes forward-follow the person in front of you. Lips zipped-mouth closed Low Speed-stay on the right side, one tile away from wall Bathroom: For students who struggle to follow the rules in the hall I will use supervision and proximity control to modify behavior.

Morning Meeting For those students who struggle to sit on the carpet and keep their hands and feet to themselves, I will create a designated spot, solely for them, directly behind or in front of their classmates, thus eliminating extra temptation. Entering Room in Morning For students who struggle staying on task I will set a timer and challenge them to beat their personal best time from the previous day. When a student forgets to do their homework, I will have them write their name in a notebook. They will write in this log every time they do not turn in their homework in on time and explain themselves. This will help me keep track of how many times the same student does not do his/her homework, makes students think about why they did not do their homework, and establishes accountability. Discipline Plan: I will create a community in my classroom by creating a classroom economy system for the town of "Whooville." The negative and positive consequences will be used for all students with accommodations for those who struggle, as laid out before.

Positive Consequences:
In addition to the previous positive consequences: 1. A sticker chart with a monetary value attached to the amount of stickers 2. Check in check out sheet for recognition of positive choices 3. At the end of the day of the student has earned 10 marbles in the positive choices jar he will receive an extra reward coupon. Negative Consequences: 1. Class or individual verbal reminder

2. Student will be given specific warning

3. Student will be ticketed (lose money or chance cards) 4. Students name will be placed in behavior book. This is what the behavior book looks like, only with my students' names. I will record the date, what action you took (i.e. warning, moving seats, calling home, etc), the reason why you had to do that (i.e. student talking, not keeping hands to self, etc), and then I will have the student sign. This allows them take ownership, and they are aware that you are taking notes on their behavior.

5. Student will be given a behavior card: Please stop what you are doing and re-

think your behavior choice. Bring this card back to me after the lesson and tell me what you were doing wrong and how you are going to make better choices. 6. Student will be removed from situation. May go to "quiet place/birds nest/brain chair" to calm down and think about behavior. Or may return to seat, sit out of special etc.

7. Note home or phone call I will have the student fill out a Parent Contact Think Sheet. Once they have filled it out I will have them take it home and then contact the parent. The parent sheet will look a little like this: Parent Contact Think Sheet Today I did not make very good choices but I know I will learn from this and try my best to do better tomorrow. I had trouble with:__________________________ Listening:___ Being Safe:___ Following Directions:____ Being Responsible:____ Being Respectful:__ Being Safe:_____ Other:__

I am on Parent Contact because:___________________________________ Next time I promise to: __________________________________________ Student Signature:_________________________________ Teacher Signature:___________________________ Parent Signature:_______________________________ Parents:______________________________________ Please discuss this note with your child at home. Then, sign and return to school the next day. Thank you for your support! For every day that a student does not have to fill out a "Think Sheet," he will receive an extra $2 towards his money for the auction. After a week of no "Think Sheets" a student will receive a positive note and extra lunch with his favorite teacher, Ms. Soandso 8. Sent to buddy Classroom 9. Parent Teacher Conference 10. Sent to Principal * If needed I will create a FBA and BIP for the student to continue to finds alternative positive ways to curtail the negative behavior

Emergency Plan:
If I have students who are affected by loud noises, I will assign a peer officer to help and encourage them to the designated meeting place. I will also have an emergency sub tote with plans, activities, and worksheets prepared in case I have to leave unexpectedly.

Communication Techniques: Communication for Tier II will be the exact same as Tier I only the communication will be more frequent. I will also, have a Pass Book/Planner set up with the parents, so that we are able to communicate back and forth on a daily basis. Summary

My tier II plan will allow me to continue to teach effectively even when students are not complying with the expectations and procedures. Although this plan will need to be modified, I believe I have established a dependable system that can be used for students that struggle to stay on task, turn in homework, be disrespectful, etc. This system will hold my students accountable with consistent positive support from me, the teacher. From my experience, I students that do not fit into Tier 1, need to learn the correct behaviors. This plan will allow those students to learn socially acceptable behavior.
