CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.4 Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.5 Recognize common types of texts (e.g., storybooks, poems). NCTE/IRA Literacy Standards Students participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members of a variety of literacy communities. Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics). Students develop an understanding of and respect for diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social roles. Reading is socio-psycholinguistic process. Students will discuss their ideas about what makes them each individually special. (Reading is Social p.4) We will discuss that every person is not the same; everyone looks different, and has different qualities. (Reading is psychological p.4) Students will share their characteristics, predict different

characteristics of the children in the book, and discuss with the class as we make our chart. (Reading is linguistic p. 4) Today we will be reading a book about children who are special and unique or different just like you and me. There are a lot of things that makes everyone special. Some things are your hair color, eye color, and height, but today we will learn about more things that make us special.

(Reading is social p.4) Have students brainstorm characteristics of them that make them make special, unique or different. (Reading is psychological p. 4) Their ideas will be listed on a chart located in the front of the classroom so students can visually see both an illustration while making connections to the written words of qualities that make them uniquely special and different. Invite students to share their qualities while teachers visually represent characteristics by drawing on a chart located in the front of the classroom (Reading linguistic p.4) Today I want to share with you a book about kids just like you! This story is really special. We will learn that it does not matter what a person looks like; it matters who they are on the inside. Nonfiction: This is a picture book that shows how each American is special. In America, people are most only special, but they are also different by the clothes they wear, or music they listen to. Characters: The book celebrates how we are different and show kids who are special in their own ways. Story Sequence: Poem Setting: America Problem/ Resolution: Although we are all different, what truly matters is what is on the inside.

Getting Started I wonder I predict I bet I think Looking at the illustrations Thinking Aloud as you read

Lets look at the cover of the book. Do you think this book is about kids like you, or adults? What do you think this book is about? Do you think the book will talk about the same special or unique qualities we talked about when we made our chart?

p. 2 - Are you proud to be an American? What makes you proud to be from America? Is anyone here from a different Country? (Show class World Map) p. 5-6 Do you have any friends who have almond eyes, or a different nose? Do you like that they are different than you? Why or why not? p. 7-8 - Do you look like anyone in your family? p. 11-12 - Do you like to wear any of the clothes the kids wore in the book, like baggy jeans or a baseball cap? Do you like to wear something different? p. 17-18 Does it matter if someone listens to different music than you? Does that make them less special or unique? p. 27-28 Do you know what a family tree is? Everyone has a family tree, but everyones family tree can be different. A family tree shows us who is in our family, like our grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters or anyone else who takes care of you. Do you know who would be on your own family tree? What are some other differences the book might talk about or we can think of? Do you think everyone in the book will be the same? Do you think the kids in the book will be like you or your friends? What do you special features would you like to see in the book?

Make Predictions

Connect Personally

Do you look like anyone in your family? What are the similarities? Do you look like anyone in the class? What features or special qualities do your friends have that make them special? p. 30 Through the chart of different characteristics making up the classroom, children will have a visual representation of different characteristics making everyone uniquely special. Students will also see a board in the front of the classroom with pictures of different characteristics/qualities that make up an American person. p. 7-8 I am my grandfathers dimples framing my grin. Im trying to figure out what exactly a grin is. Lets look at the picture. What do you think a grin is? p. 27-28- I am a new branch sprouting in the majestic family tree. Now that we know what a family tree is, what do you think they mean by saying a majestic family tree? P.27-28 - Family tree. What is a family tree? Why is a family tree important? Do you share the same or different qualities of people in your family tree? Visually show students examples of our own family trees, showing students that although they are similar, they have many differences. What you would add to this book? Do you have any special features/characteristics that the book did not talk about? (Critical literacy p.279) Have you ever noticed differences between you and your friends before reading this book? (Critical literacy p.279) What did we learn from this book? (Critical literacy p.286) What is the most important thing that you learned from the book? (Critical literacy p.286)

Our art activity will include the children drawing a self portrait on a star; showing what makes them special or unique, which will come together and be displayed on an American flag with their stars representing what makes America special. Two eggs will be shown to students; one white egg and one brown egg. Students will be asked, Do these eggs look alike or do they look different? What do you think the inside of the eggs will look like? Do you think they will look the same, or do you think they will look different? (Crack eggs) Show students that although the two eggs looked very different on the outside, they are the same on the inside, just like us.
