Historical Social Movement:

Prison Reform Movement

Local Social Movement:

Young participants and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. risk their freedom and patiently sit in jail cells.

Youth are denied their freedom, yet patiently stand in jail cells behind prison bars.

When youth and young activists risked their freedom in response to unjust laws it is clear that patience and commitment are necessary qualities for the Civil Rights Movement and Prison Reform Movement. During the Civil Rights Movement, young activists used civil disobedience to deliberately get arrested in order to fill the jail cells. This showed that activists were committed to obtaining rights, since they knew that time behind bars would hopefully get people to pay attention and reveal the unjust laws, but they did not know how long it would take. Many defied the law without knowing how much time they would spend in jail. Similar to Civil Rights activists, youth and prison reform participants today also commit their lives to changing unjust prison conditions and laws. Although they may not get arrested, they still devote time and their lives to advocate to young in jails. Since it is difficult to changes laws and sentences, patience is necessary when dealing with laws, judges, and prison officials. Patience and commitment are two essential qualities that activists in both movements possess.
