Most important conflict was to deal with racial diversity, not only in their school, but on the field. They wanted to overcome the racism within the team, the coaching staff, and the community to build a football team that can win matches. There was also a conflict between the coaches. There was a situation when long time coach Bill Yoast is forced to step down as head coach in favor of Herman Boone who was the newly appointed coach for the team. There was an Intragroup conflict between the black & white as they were hostile toward each other to express individuality and resist the forming of a team. When Herman Boone is brought in as an assistant coach to join the all-white coaching staff. When Herman Boone is appointed head coach over a wining white coach, the existing team was reluctant to accept the change.

Breaking apart old habits for change to take place. Like in the scene when the groups were asked to practice together more for the matches to take place. Changing behaviors and learning new habits was the initiative that was taken by the coach. It was done when the players were at the camp and forced to interact with each other and begin to look at themselves as one team. Creating a readiness for change and overcoming resistance to change was another step taken. When the coaches take the players away to camp and forced the players to sit with, room with, and get to know the players of a different race. Despite having ten head coach offers from other high schools in northern Virginia Yoast decided to accept the assistant coach position under Boone to support his players. He initially tries to control the situation as an assistant coach but Boone immediately shows his power and makes it clear who is the head coach.
