Summary draft 2: Outsourcing the mind

In the article Outsourcing the mind , Gerd Gigerenzer a psychologist argues about the impact of technology on our mind and especially about the way to obtain information from an outside source in particular from internet which change our way of thinking. Gigerenzer starts by explaining a particular situation without any technology and present his observations. The situation is about his job in the Center of Advanced Study in Palo, where there was no technology, and where he was supposed to work without any of it even if usually he had his phone and other stuffs like a computer with him. The purpose of this experience was to push people to think properly and deeply without any help, especially from the technology. The author pursues his explanation with the example of Internet and the way Internet can be used in a good way and how it changes our way of thinking. And he expresses that Internet modifies our cognitive functions and pushes us to search (prep) information differently than usual. He also says that Internet wasnt the only thing that changes our way of thinking. Actually, Writing really changes the way people think. Gigerenzer develops his observations and supports that with writing analysis become possible, people with writing can now compare texts etc. and that without writing our mental skills were at their limits. As well, he asserts that writing affect our memory in long and court term. That is why schools substitute memorization by reading and writing. Moreover, the author keeps on saying that today human being do not have a long-term memory and that when we need to search (prep) information about something we prefer looking over outside sources like Internet instead of the inside sources like our memory. He supports his idea with the fact that Internet is at the origin of this phenomenon and that it helps us in the way of seeking information. In addition, Gigerenzer contends that Internet is a huge storage of information and that we are in a specific process where we outsourcing information to our brain, our memory. He regrettably admits that we are about to lose some skills like concentration for a long amount of time but, that Internet will also help us to develop new significant skills such as how accessing information. The author concluded by saying that our brain and the Internet were an extended system . Meaning that Internet was like a huge memory for us and that our mind will adjusts to it, till a new technology comes up and replaces it. S-V-AG S /Pl Verb choice Prep Verb tense
