us Course: College Algebra and Trigonometry Where: A-311 Text: Algebra and Trigonometry by Larson and Hostetler

2013 2014

Welcome to class! This course is an extension of Algebra 2 and will cover graphing and modeling with equations, analyzing functions, right triangle trigonometry, trig functions and their graphs, the laws of sine and cosine, and many other topics. Whenever possible, connections will be made between the content and applications outside the classroom. Along the way, we will also review pertinent topics from previous math courses and discuss what it takes to be a successful student of mathematics. Expectations: I expect every student to show up to class on time. Tardiness will not be tolerated. In the event of student absence, that student is responsible to make up the missed content and any missed assignments and/or assessments within 10 school days. Any classes not made up will result in a 2 point deduction per class from the students quarterly grade. Students can expect from the instructor that the classroom will be conducted on the basis of mutual respect, teacher to student, student to teacher, and student to student. All school rules will be followed. Initial violations of the rules will be handled by either teacher detention, or by confiscation of inappropriate material, depending upon the offense. Additional violations, or in some cases egregious initial violations, will result in removal from the classroom to the appropriate dean. Materials: Please bring to class every day the following materials: Pencil/pen, Notebook, Organizer, Textbook, Scientific Graphing Calculator (TI-83 Plus or TI-84 is highly recommended.) Other materials may be required from time to time. Homework: Homework will be assigned nearly every day. Assignments will be checked each day for effort, completion, and comprehension. Occasional Homework Checks will be announced one day in advance and may include any homework problem from the week. Grading: Assessment grades are based on a point system. Each assessment will be assigned a certain number points. Grades will be based on the number of points achieved, divided by the number of points possible. Formal assessment (test, quizzes, projects) will comprise 85% of your quarter grade. Homework will be 10% of your quarter grade. Class participation will be the final 5% of your quarter grade. Extra Help: If you would like to get some extra help, please do not hesitate to speak with me so that we can set up a time to meet after school. On Monday of each week I will post in the classroom which day I will be staying after that week, though often other arrangements can be made.
