Week 4, Day 1

Objectives

Monday

Students will have an understanding of the last layer of the Rainforest: The Forest Floor. Students will also be able to explore the Rainforest Concern Website and develop and start to develop awareness that the Rainforests around the world are disappearing.

Materials
iPad Kindle App The Great Kapok Tree book Prezi Screencast Projector Rainforest Concern Website KWL Chart

Directions
1. Begin the lesson by gathering students on the rug in the front of the room. 2. Start a new KWL chart on anchor paper or draw one up on the board. Fill out the first 2 columns as a class before reading the book. (K-What I want know, W-What I want to know, L-What I learned). 3. Using an e-reader on the Kindle App, read the first 8 pages of, The Great Kapok Tree. Make sure to point out the pictures and details on the pages. Have a quick discussion with the students about the content of those pages. Fill out the last column of the KWL chart (The L column) based on the content of these 7 pages. 4. When finished, send the students back to their desks. 5. Access the presentation on the Forest Floor. There should be a folder in the middle of the desktop labeled, Forest Floor Presentation. Play the short video for the students. When the video is finished, talk with the students about some of the characteristics about the Forest Floor and what they learned from the video.

6. Pass out the iPads. Using the i-nigma app, students will scan the following QR code, which will take them to the Rainforest Concern website.

7. Give the students about 10-15 minutes to explore the website and figure out which animals in the Rainforest are endangered or becoming endangered. 8. To finish out the lesson, talk with the students about what they learned and how they felt when exploring the website.
