GoogleEarthisoneofmanyonlinemappingprogramsthatoffersusersinteractive mappingcapabilities.Withworldlevelcoverageofsatellite,aerialphotography,streets, pointsofinterestandmore,thisvirtualglobeisoneofthemostpopularprogramsbeing usedbybothGISandnonGISusers.Mosttakeadvantageofthecurrentimagerythat GoogleEarthoffersandformanyareastheresolutionisimpressivelyhigh(upto7.6 cm). Withacollectionofimagerylargerthanmostlibrariescanoffer,GoogleEarthis beingusedbyacademicusersasasourceforreferenceorbasemaps.WhatGoogle Earthcanofferhoweverthatmostonlinemappingprogramsdonot,istheabilityfor userstoaddtheirownfeaturestoonlinemappingprograms. Thiscombinationoffree andaccessibleimagerywithcustomizedGISlayersisintriguingmanyGISuserswho dontnecessarilyneedaccesstoGISsoftwareanymore.Somestudentsatthe UniversityofWaterlooforexample,areinterestedinaerialoverviewsoflargeareas suchastheGreaterTorontoArea.Usingsolelylibraryresources,thiswouldentail openinghundredsofimagerytilesinArcGIStosatisfythegeographicalextent. These studentsarefindingitmoreconvenienttouseGoogleEarthfortheaerialoverviewwhile atthesametimecustomizingandfinalizingtheirmapbyaddingtheirownGISfilestoit. ThesamemapcanalsobecreatedinGoogleMaps,andthensharedwiththerestof theworld anadvantageofonlinemapping.
CustomizedMappinginGoogleEarth/GoogleMaps
UserscanaddgeospatialdatatoGoogleEarthasKeyholeMarkupLanguage(KML) files.KMLisanXMLbasedlanguagethatmanagesthedisplayof3Dgeospatialdata inbothGoogleMapsandGoogleEarth. AcompressedKMLisKMZ.KMLfilesin GoogleEarthcanbecustomizedinwaysthatShapefilescanbecustomizedinArcGIS. Theusercanspecifysymbols,labels,manipulatefeatureappearances,alterattribute informationandmore.GoogleEarthwilldisplaybothvectorandrasterdatainKML format.

KMLorKMZfilescanbecreatedquicklyandeasilyinESRIsArcGIS9.2program.All geospatialfilesthataresupportedbyArcMapcanbeconvertedintoKML/KMZfiles. Thisincludesbothrasterandvectorfiles. Theusercanconvertjustonefile(suchasa vectorlinefile),oranentire.mxdconsistingofseveralgeospatialfiles.
1. InArcMap,addthegeospatialfilesyouwouldliketoconverttoKMLformat 2. ManipulatethefilesasyouwouldtoseethemdisplayedinGoogle(filename, symbol,colour,attributeinformation). 3. IfyouchoosetoconvertallthefilesinyourArcMapsession,saveyourproject first.Allfileswillbeconvertedintoone.kmzfile,howeverinGoogletheywillbe displayedasindividuallayers. 4. OpenArcToolboxandnavigatetotheConversiontools.Youwillseetheoption toeitherexportanindividuallayertoKMLortheentiremaptoKML.
Selectyourlayerormapdocumentandchooseanameforyour.kmzfile.Youcanclick OKforthedefaultpropertiesoryoucancontinueandgothroughthepropertyoptionsto customizeyourfile.
5.ThesizeofyourKMZwillvarydependingonthesizeofyourinputfiles.
AddingKMZfilesinGoogleEarth 1. OpenGoogleEarth 2. Openyour.kmzfile:FileOpen 3. GoogleEarthwillautomaticallyzoomintotheextentofyourlayers.Your featureswilldisplayexactlythesameastheydisplayedinArcMap,butnowyou haveimageryasyourbackground.Youcanalteryour.kmzfilesifyouneedto changesymbols,colours,attributeinformation,etc.
AddingImageOverlayfilesinGoogleEarth AlthoughimagedatacanbeconvertedtoKMLinArcMap,someusersmaywishtoadd ungeoreferencedimagerytoGoogleEarth.Googlewillgeoreferencetheimageoverlay accordinglyandwilldrapetheimagecorrectlyontheearthssurface.Thisdoes howeverrequiretheusersinputofcoordinateinformation.Someusersmayfindthat theimagehasbeenoverlayedaccuratelyenoughwithoutcoordinateinputthatmay workforsomeaswell. 1.Zoomintotheapproximateareayouwantyourimagetobeplaced.GoogleEarth automaticallyinputsthecoordinatesofyourgeographicalareaofyourimage. 2.ToaddtheimageoverlyinGoogleEarth,clickonAddImageOverlay
4. Youcanmodifythepropertiesofyourimage,includingthecoordinatesifyou knowthem.
5. Yourimageoverlaycannowbecombinedwithyour.kmzfiles.Thisimagehas
GoogleEarthsimageryinthebackground,withascannedimageoverlayand .kmzvectorfilesontop.Thevectorfileshavebeenmadesemitransparent.
AddingKMZfilesinGoogleMaps GoogleMapsalsoprovidesuserswiththeabilitytocreatecustommapswithout needingtodownloadanyspecialsoftware.WithGoogleMaps,usersarecreatingtheir mapsontheinternetandsubsequentlycanaddtheirlivemapsonwebpages,aswellas sharetheirmapURLwithotherinterestedparties. 1. Connecttowww.maps.google.com,andgototheMyMapstab.Ifyouhavent registeredwithGooglealready,youwillneedtosetupafreeaccountwiththem. 2. ClickonCreatenewmap.Youmayenteratitleandadescriptionofyourmap. 3. Toadd.kmzfiles,clickonImport.
ThisimageconsistsofGoogleorthoimageryandtwo.kmzfiles:generalbuildingson campusattheUniversityofWaterlooandbuildingsthatcontainlibraries. Thehtmlcodethatconnectsuserstothismapcanbeaddedtowebsitessuchasblogs.
